Power Up Problem after CPU Upgrade

F

Frank

After changing cpu's my computer won't power up properly. When
turning on the rear "hard" power switch, power should come on for a
second or two then turn off again, right? Then I turn on the front
power button and everything fires up as normal and the computer boots
up. That's not happening. I get no power at all by turning on the
rear hard switch, and if I push in the button in front the power comes
on (with the rear switch on) but no boot up/black screen.
I've tried reinserting the cpu card, memory sticks, video card,
resetting the on-board real time clock, removing and reinserting the
battery, unplugging the power cord...all in various combinations to
get the thing back on. I have successfully got the power back on
twice before by "fiddling around" with my board in this fashion, but I
guess I just got lucky, because I can't seem to get it right this
time.
I would really like to upgrade my cpu, but this hang-up has got me
stumped!
BTW, board is compatable with new cpu (ASUS P2B-F bios 1014.003
P3800/133).

Nothing should happen when you turn on the rear power switch. The system
should not power up until you press the ATX power switch on the front -
so your system is behaving normally to that point.

This sounds like it may be a processor seating problem to me - it's
possible the CPU retention mechanism is not physically compatible with
the new CPU. Is the new CPU the Slot-1 version, or are you using an
adapter? Does the system boot up when you re-install the original CPU?
What is the original CPU? What revision is your P2B-F?

You will probably need to follow a logical troubleshooting sequence to
resolve the problem, as opposed to "fiddling around" :) Answers to the
above queries would help us suggest an appropriate approach.

I hate to break it to you, but my grandfather has had the name "Frank"
for well over 70 years. I'm afraid that on his behalf, I'll have to ask
you to change your name too.

That's a matter of configuration (usually in the BIOS), and sometimes
dependant on the status of the machine when it was powered down
(Specifically, if it was powered off using the ATX switch or software vs
power being cut)

This is crossposted to five groups. This is also usenet. There are quite
a few people using 'frank' as their posting name currently (it's not
that unique, sorry to break it to you), as in the past, as in the
future. Indeed, a google search will confirm this. How about he keeps
his posting name, and you change yours to 'Frank the ****tard'. It's not
as if he's copying your email address, too, and trying to pass himself
off as you to such an extent that headers would have to be checked.
However, if 'Frank the ****tard' does not appeal, perhaps a better
choice would be "Frank 1.0" and "Frank 2.0", etc. I've already done the
research for you in the google archives, and noone posts or has posted
with those handles. A little creativity is all it takes.
