Power Options will not hold

I have a dell laptop with XP Pro SP3 installed. My power options will not
hold. I can change them so that the laptop will never shut down or go to
sleep etc, regardless if it's plugged in or not. Sometimes the settings will
hold for 1 day, sometimes for 5 minutes, either way they always go back to
the defaults of 15 minutes. It's very annoying that I can't find a fix for
this. How can I fix this? I'm wondering if I can restrict permissions to the
power options tree in the registry? All the fixes on the net do not seem to
work. Any help would be great..

Hi Ray,

Did you try creating a new power scheme using Save As? Does your user
account allow you to make those changes?

Hey guys, sorry for the late reply. My seasonal business is starting to pick
up and spare time is rare now. Anyway, the reg fix did not work. From what I
have been reading online it does not seem to be an easy fix. So my 1st
question remains. Can I restrict access to the registry via user rights for
the registry entry. IE stop any service or user from accessing that registry
key other then my personal account. I figure this would stop any default's
from reloading or any changes being FORCED. Thanks..

Hi Ray,

You could try right clicking on the key and selecting Permissions. I
don't know if removing all but yourself will work, but you could try.

I had a similar situation with a key value that kept getting changed. I
finally created a reg file to reset the value, and I have a batch file
in the Startup folder to merge it. That way it was set to the way I
wanted it on each boot. That might be your only solution.

If so, change the value(s) to what you want, then export the key with a
name you can remember (like powersettings.reg as below). Then create a
batch file with the following:

:: Reset Power Options on startup
%windir%\regedit.exe /s "c:\PATH\powersettings.reg"
exit

If you have file extensions hidden in Explorer, use quotes when saving
the file name, i.e. "powersettings.reg".

Place a batch file shortcut in the Startup folder.
