If you can't get the problem sorted out, download and
install the freeWizmo utility from
http://grc.com/.
Read up on how to create a Quick Start icon that you just
click to send the monitor into hibernation that only takes
a mouse movement to come out of.
You might also be able to time the monitor shutdown,
because it comes with an inbuilt screensaver.
When I am leaving my computer for a while I just click the
icon to activate Wizmo. You can also activate it from the
Start => Run box.

My system is Windows XP Pro on an AMD Athlon driving a
large generic CRT monitor. I'd like to have the PC shut
off the monitor after a minute of idle, so I set that in
Power Options. When I do this and wait a minute, the
monitor powers down momentarily and then comes right back
up. I can change the delay and I get the same behavior.
I've already quit any apps running in the system tray, but
I can't successfully get the monitor to power down and stay
powered down. I'd really appreciate your assistance.
