Possible OT: M$ optical usb mouse sure is funky!

S

Steve N.

I've seen this problem in several machines and various versions of
Windows, a usb M$ optical mouse (brand new, old, it don't matter) seems
to have a mind of it's own; double clicks instead of single clicks,
scrolls up or down in _any_ app window on it's own, sometimes continuous
uncontrollable scrolling forever. Mouse settings are normal, drivers are
standard. Damned frustrating. Other brands of mice do not exhibit this
funkiness that I've seen. And no, it's not a surface reflection issue,
the surface is irrelevant. Anyone else seen this?

I think it depends on which MS mouse you mean. My son's MS mouse works
great; it is an optical one with two programmable buttons but is not
the latest. I think I got it a couple of years ago. He's a gamer and it
gets a really good workout. It has held up well.

OTOH, I bought two Explorer mice (the silver ones with the tiltable
scroll wheels) and they got funky and unusable within a matter of
months. It wasn't a matter of drivers either because as you well know
I'm not using Windows drivers on this machine (cough cough) and the
mouse exhibited exactly the same symptoms as it did on the XP box. I
replaced both mice with generic Logitech ones - the one on my main box
here has got nice ladybug spots on it and is red. :)

I actually prefer Logitech mice, but I don't go for the really fancy
ones because I won't have the driver support for all the buttons
anyway.

If you are a gamer, the Razr (or something like that) is supposed to be
wonderful, but I'm not going to spend $75+ on a mouse. Not even if it
has Hello Kitty on it. Well... ;-)

That's good. How old is the kid? Curious. My daughter is almost 1 year
old :)) She is not only walking but *running* and eats EVERYTHING! LOL!

Gotta love it, an MVP (and a damn good one, might I add!) who seems to
prefer Linux sometimes. LOL! You're too much. What are you running now?

:) Girlie stuff. Sounds like one of them new dang VW bugs.

I just replaced one here with a Labtec mouse (which I believe is
actually made by Logitech, not sure tho') and haven't seen any of the
same funkiness yet. It just doesn't have the nice shape of the M$ one (I
like the curves - I'm a guy - what can I say?)

LOL! I've actually seen Hello Kitty adult toys online. Damned silly if
you ask me :)

I'm not a gamer, just a geek by trade.

Thanks Malke. Always appreciate your replies.

My boys are 16 and almost 13. One-year-olds are so adorable. I'm sure I
don't have to tell you to enjoy every minute of her growing up; it
happens so fast.

Actually there are quite a few MVP's who use Linux and Steve Friedl is
the Unix Wizard. I've used Linux for my main work (it isn't a sometime
thing) for years and years. Right now I have SuSE 9.3 on my desktop and
on my laptop and SuSE has been my distro of choice for years. We'll see
what happens with OpenSuSE and Novell next, though.

Of course I have several XP machines and the boys do, too. All my
clients use Windows although I install Linux file servers where
appropriate. I'm not one of those people who believes it has to be
either-or. I had a Mac for a while, too. Very pretty gui; very elegant.
Too expensive to run compared to Linux - you basically have to buy all
the apps and I'm spoiled.

Yes, I like girlie stuff and I do love Hello Kitty, but I won't discuss
the "adult toys". Somehow that's just not right!
Thanks Malke. Always appreciate your replies.

It's mutual. Take care and give your baby girl a squeeze for me.

Oh yes, I enjoy the heck out of her and she adores me :) I'm a very
blessed man.

I love teenagers, they are so smart, energetic and quick witted. I work
for a school district and my office is behind a large high school. Teen
kids are amazing and funny. I'd be a teacher but I couldn't stand all
the extra hours they put in.

I've used Linux for years, too, mostly experimental stuff. My background
is a lot of Novell networking, the SuSE evolution is interesting,
Novell Netware 6.5 is already including a lot of Linux code and the next
release we'll have the choice of NW kernal or SuSE kernal.

I have some odd hardware at home and none of can even boot a SuSE Live
CD, runs Red Hat, Mandrake and Fedora Core just fine, though.

Macs are great, always have been. Used to sell them when I worked for
OSU Bookstores, but never owned one, though. Too expensive.

Yeah, it isn't right, just too wierd. Sorry if I offended you with that
comment. I just thought it was funny, in a twisted way. But then I'm
kinda funny in a twisted way, too.

:) No problem. She's learned to give kisses recently, too. :) If you
want I'll send you a picture of her. She is so dang cute, she _really_
is. I'm not just saying that cuz I'm her dad, everybody says it. Smart,
too. I can't wait for her to start talking!

You didn't offend me at all. I also have a twisted sense of humor so
don't give it another untwisted thought! ;-)

And there will come a time when you want her to be quiet, too! ;-) I'd
love a picture and I wouldn't mind giving you my email address but I
don't want any of them on Usenet, even munged. I used to make myself
available via email but got too many weirdos and so I just don't do
that any more. If you want to post back with a munged-up mail of your
own, I'll email you.

Well, I'm off to clean up another client's malware-infested computer. I
suppose I should be grateful; bigger toys for bigger boys cost more
money.

See ya!

Dang! It just did the scrollimg again with the Labtec mouse on my Win2K
box. Don't know what the heck is up with this. No malware or viruses.
But at least this time I could stop it with a click.

Are you sure you're not pushing down on the scroll button or something
to make an automatic scroll?

I don't know what is going on with you and your mice then. I'm sorry.
Video drivers? Did you install video drivers from Windows Update
because you were in a hurry (I know you would not do that on purpose).
Otherwise, I just don't know.

Back to cleaning up malware for now,

Me niether.

Nope. This one hasn't been updated since SP3 :) but maybe it is a video
driver issue. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into it.
Otherwise, I just don't know.

No big deal. Maybe I am really just a spaz and don't realize it.
Back to cleaning up malware for now,

Malke

Thanks.
