possible botched sp2 install?

I used Dell's CD to install XP SP1 onto my computer, and then installed SP2
over that. I restarted and it worked fine, so I started installing some
drivers. Suddenly, the computer hung at the Windows startup/logo screen while
loading. This happened with a previous installation, and then I opted to
simply not install SP2 so I could have a working computer. When I attempt to
repair the installation, I have several problems. First is that most attempts
to get to the setup screen end in various errors, mostly claiming a corrupt
file. When I press F6 to install a RAID/SCSI driver, the setup simply doesn't
respond and continues loading other things and then claims there's no HD! Is
there an updated version of SP2 or some fix for the problem I'm seeing?

"so I started installing some drivers"

I'd review this one first.

How do I actually go about finding the drivers? The drivers are ones that
came with the Soyo motherboard for USB and the RAID controller. They worked
fine under XP and SP1, though they aren't officially certified. Might they
still be an issue under SP2? They worked fine for a couple restarts under SP2
before it suddenly stopped fully loading

If the correct raid controller driver was installed when you installed
Windows then no further action is required. If your drive controller is not
natively supported then you must *F6* very early and very important (at
setup is inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller
detection, and select S to specify additional drivers during text mode
portion of windows setup.

Motherboard drivers are pretty much specific and using those
from different motherboards will inevitably lead to problems.
Furthermore, having a Dell computer, the option for restoring,
or recovering, the computer is, unfortunately, tied to the CD
installation disc or recovery disc that is supplied with the
computer. And for the future, the RAID/SCSI/SATA drivers that
are used with F6 needs to be first copied to a floppy diskette
from the installation or utilities cdrom or from the website.

Well..I can only add that the FIRST ver. of SP2 had some "bumps" in the
road..I applied it over my XP-Home Ed.[SP1]..and really did not get a good OS
until I was useing a SP2-ver. of XP(Home Ed.)w/a XP-Pro Upgrade[SP2}..I would
dump any SP1 software for SP2 software.
