Port 80 - Windows XP Pro machine

Anna

I was checking my port security at the sheilds up site today (
https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 ) and it said port 80 was open.

How do I go about closing this port? I'm using XP Pro, have a hardware
firewall in the form of a router and use a software firewall, yet this port
shows open.

I do have Office XP including Frontpage if that is the cause?

thx

Anna

Unplug your computer from the Internet? If you want Internet access, you
need that port open.

Port 80 is for web access. If you block it you will not be able to open
any web pages.

Thanks for responding.

The example on the Shields Up site is very misleading. It showed port 80 as
ideally being in stealth mode or closed and any open port 80 is a risk to
security.

So I guess my pc is as secure as it can be assuming I want internet access,
which I do.

With a properly configured firewall port 80 will appear as stealthed
when testing with shields up and still allow web access.

Anna,

Check your router's settings. If it has remote management enabled,
that will leave port 80 open on the router.

So what can I check to have my port 80 show as stealth.

I never changed any settings on my router, they are all at the default

Sorry Anna, I haven't used a router so can't advise you. But are you
also using a third party software firewall like Sygate or Zone Alarm?
In general you should be running both. Because no matter what hardware
/ router based firewall you have, then don't usually monitor out bound
traffic, just inbound. So some nasty on your system can "phone home" so
to speak.

Addendum -- Sygate and Zone Alarm both monitor inbound and outbound.
They each have free and paid versions. The free version works just fine.

Yes, I am running Sygate Pro and a Network Everywhere hardware firewall.

That's interesting that it still shows port 80 open. I have Sygate and
it shows stealthed.

I did a netstat on my laptop. The only time it shows port 80 as open is
when I use IE to surf to a webpage.
