pop-ups and changing my homepage

L

Linda

I have ad-aware that I run almost every day, but it's not getting rid of
these. I know something hidden is doing this. First, all I'm doing is
checking mail. I haven't even gone into explorer yet, and 3 web pages pop
up. I keep having these new icons on my start page, bingo, investing,
dating, online casino. I delete them and the next day they're back. My
home page keeps changing to omegasearch.com.
Anyone know a way to get rid of this?
Thanks

omegasearch.com
Go to majorgeeks.com & on the left hand side click on spyware tools
Download & install & then update spybot Search & Destroy as well as
CWShredder, & it never hurts to have the hijack this program. Very
handy tool/
The spybot s&d & cwshredder should take care of most of your problems,
but I'd be willing to bet that you'll need to run hijack this The hjt

It might involve a bit of a learning curve,
but I think you will deem it worthwhile in the long run.
Go to the link below (for Opera v6.06) and try this browser.
You might need to cleanse your system of all ad/spyware and browser
helper objects (hijackers), and I'm sure there will be ample suggestions
how to do that, then spend a little time getting to know the "IMO" best
browser available. You will no longer be vulnerable to usurped start
pages, or popups, or inline frame HTML (I-frame) exploits, javascript
system crashers, etc., if you configure it correctly.

PS: If you grow to like it, you can fork some bucks to get the ad banner
removed from the upper right corner, or find one of the many keygens
that will accomplish the same result. ;-)

Hijack This was designed to get rid of such "illegal activity" of
changing your browsers settings & such. But 90% of the crap is in
companies EULA somewhere & in a elusive language. Anyway go to
majorgeeks.com & get the Hijack This program. there is a tutorial at
http:// hjt.wizardsofwebsites.com/ that'll walk you through if you want
to try & clean it yourself. Or go to this forum & let the forum people
help you spywareinfo.com/forums/ The prefer if the hijack this prog is
on your main drive in it's own folder like c:\hijack this

I was worried about the name of the program for 2 weeks before I d/l'd
it, but I've cleaned up many pc's with it. Very worth wile prog to have
in the collection. Just make sure it's updated every once in a while in
case it's needed. current ver is 1.97.7

Okay, I just did the hijack this, and checked everything that said
"omegasearch" and got rid of those, but there were a bunch more programs
that I wasn't sure of, so I let it alone. I'm hoping this works. I'll come
back with more questions if it doesn't.
Thanks for the help

Linda the omegasearch was just the beginning of the deleting, there are
probably 2 files on your pc that will need to be deleted 1 might look
like c:\windows\system32\system32.exe. but if you post your log on the
swi forum they will help you out

Does this mean that 7.23 is free of these exploits?

I wouldn't know,
I wasn't impressed enough with the new GUI to pursue it,
besides v6.06 works just fine here.

Okay, just got home from work, and computer is still extremely slow and that
bottom bar came up again from omegasearch. I ran adaware, spybot and
scanned with hijack this. Now I'm going to show my ignorance. I tried to
highlight the whole log so I can copy and paste and then post, but it
doesn't highlight, how do I copy it to post? Sorry this sounds so stupid.
I even read all their faq's hoping it would say how to copy the log.

I'm breaking my rule of ignoring top posters just this once,
you click the box on the left that says "Save Log", go to where you
saved it to, then you can highlight within your text editor, or just
post the log as is, since it's only a text file.

However, that's the implied reason you gave for avoiding it.

If that's your real reason then say so. 7.23 works fine here.

Geeze Art, you seem a bit fractious this morning,
maybe try switching to decaf? ;-)

I recommended the version I use and am familiar with, and indicated why
I abandoned the evaluation of versions after it. No implications, just
statements of fact as I know them to be.

That's all I drink is decaf.

But the link you gave claims that the vulnerabilities were cleared up
in 7.1. So what was the point of posting the vulnerability link? It
seems to boil down to the the fact that you simply prefer version 6.

Then simply state that you prefer version 6 rather than scaring people
off of the latest versions of Opera. That would have been a fact :)

Ok. I've read the other posts, too. So, there is no reason to
recommend the older version other than your personal taste. That's
fine, but please so state. Thanks.

I rather like the new GUI. <g>

Like I told that other guy,
use whatever you want to,
I don't have to navigate the mess on your screen,
just my own,
and v6.06 creates less of that for me.

Use whatever you want, it's your machine, you have to look at it.

Quite true. I simply wanted to clarify that your statement about not
using v7 due of exploits was not true.

Thanks.
