Poor performance in GTA Vice City after service pack install

I have recently installed service pack 1 for xp and
directx 9.0b. Since then the game performance in GTA Vice
City has been absymal (very jerky) when before it ran
flawlessly. This is despite the fact that the GTA website
says that u need to have service pack 1 in order to run
the game in the first place! Can anyone help?

Ps I have done all that is recommended on the GTA website
(such as closing non-essential background programs) and
have the latest drivers for my graphics card etc.

There has been a known problem with Service Pack 1, ever since it originally
came out. There was to be a fix for the memory management patch but
Microsoft deemed it to possible include it in Service Pack 2 now.
