Polaroid Sprintscan 35e

I bought a Polaroid SprintScan 35e years ago and now would like to make
it work with my new Dell Desktop which is running Windows XP

First, can this be made to work at all? Polaroid tells me I will need
a third party software download to make it work as they do not support
XP for their Sprintscan 35e.

Second, I will need a new scsi card; my adaptec does not fit the one
slot available to me.

Meanwhile, I have a flatbed Epson 1650 photo scanner. It has 1600 x
3200 dpi resolution. My old Sprintscan manual tells me it can scan at
72-1950 dpi & 72 - 3900 (interpolated)

Am I better off w my flatbed Epson? Should I not worry about the
SprintScan?

thanks
Don

The Scsi card is easy to find at Ebay.

Get an Adaptec 2906. The Adaptec 2906 is a PCI interface and has a 25 pin
SCSI connector. Windows XP has a built-in driver for this card.

One thing you need to install for sure is the Adaptec ASPI. Windows XP does
not have ASPI, so you have install it.

If you install the Windows 2000 version, It may work with Windows XP.

Some people think that this is buggy software.
VueScan software may work.

I have an Adaptec scsi card that works with SprintScan, but the problem
is I'm not sure it will work with my new Computer. The slot I have
available appears shorter than the card. I'm not sure what you call
the different types of cards.

Are you sayng that if I can get a hardware connection that the
software, that is XP, is not going to be a problem or it is one I can
work around?

If you can make the hardware connection, then you may be able to make the
software work. There is no guarantee that you can make the software work.

Vuescan is a software that Polaroid recommends as a replacement on their web
site.
I personally do not recommend Vuescan because it is not the best of
software. But it may be the only other way to make your Sprintscan 35e work
in Windows XP after you make the hardware connection.

You have no chance if you don't have a hardware connection to the scanner.

SCSI cards are easy and cheap. But you must have a card that fits you new
computer's card slots. Windows XP does have built-in drivers for most
currently available SCSI cards.

This one piece of necessary software that does not come with your scanner
software or in the Windows XP operating system.

VueScan does not need this software, VueScan works by talking directly to
the hardware via the SCSI card.

Since you have a SCSI scanner, you must install the Adaptec ASPI for Windows
XP to "see" the scanner.

ASPI stands for Advanced SCSI Programming Interface. Windows 98SE had ASPI
built-in, Windows 2000 and XP does not.

As to whether your current SCSI card works in your new machine, I do not
know.

It is likely that your old card is a ISA card slot. It is the old card
interface of the computers of the 80's and early 90's. When the ATX
motherboards can along, the card interface was changed to a PCI interface,
PCI is 32 bit where ISA was either 8 bit or 16 bit.

This a good explanation of the ISA card slot of years past.

Howstuffworks, PCI cards.

This is the terminology I was looking for. So I will need to find a
scsi PCI card to fit my computer's slot, and then work around the
hardware.

My other question, whether I'd be better off just using my Epson 1650
flatbed instead of going to all the trouble w the Sprintscan is still
gnawing at me.

Any ideas out there?

Thanks very much for this,
Don

Only you can decide. The Epson 1650 is a good scanner, but not a real film
scanner.
The Sprintscan is an older scanner, it may have some life left in it.

I'm in the process of moving, which as always requires one to rummage
through a pile of stuff one drags around in this life long after it
becomes obsolete. I have boxes of old slides and negatives that I'm
likely never to use, except in a scanned digital format. So, I was
thinking if i could rev up my Sprintscan to do that work, maybe not in
a day, but over the next year or two or ... I could be done with it.
I won't be generating more film as I've long since made the digital
turn.
I found myself giving away my Kodak slide projector, covered in dust,
several carsoul slide carriers (now out of production I'm told), and a
slide screen, all relics of a bygone era, at least for me.

In other words, I'm not inclined to invest in my own film scanner, so
if I can get this one to work with my present equipment, all the
better. On the other hand, maybe my university will invest in one of
those fancy automtic slide scanners and save me a lot of trouble and
tedious working time. :)

thanks all,
Don
