Plug and play - very slow install of new peripherals

Hi all.
Used Easy Transfer (via usb cable) to move files and settings to new Vista
laptop from XP Home machine - then used PCMover to move programs over.
Have been tuning the laptop since - but 2 problems remain - one of them is
when I plug in a new usb peripheral, it takes a very long time to set up the
device.
Once installed, detection is reasonaly fast.
Any reason for this?
