Drivers installing very very slow... please help me!

I've installed Windows Vista on my HP laptop (AMD Turion 64 / 1 GB RAM / Ati
Radeon XPRESS 200M) and initially it worked fine.
But now, I have a serious problem when connecting new USB devices. The
drivers installation takes a very long time, and during the installation the
"SYSTEM" process takes all the CPU power slowing down the PC. Moreover,
sometimes the installation fails for timeout!
I don't have any idea of how solving this problem, and this is a very
annoying problem, because when I connect a new device (e.g. a new USB
memory, or a webcam, or a mobile phone) I have to wait for a long time
(about 20 minutes) before it works... if I'm lucky and it works! During this
wait the PC is very very slow... Only devices already installed work fine.

I'm assuming the HP wasnt supplied with Vista, if so you visited HP site and
installed Vista drivers for chipset etc, specific to your PC?
