Plug and Play not working (XP Media Center)

Hi,

Just restored my laptop. Unfortunately there seem to be a problem with the
recovery disk resulting in lots of leftover junk files and folders on C, and
most importantly PnP not working.
All hardware is recognized in some way since it is listed as unknown in
device manager. But system doesn't even attempt to locate and install the
drivers. If you do that manually it works without any problems. The biggest
trouble is with external drives. First you have to go to device manager to
install the drivers (generic ones included with XP) and then you need to go
and assign the drive letter in disk management console. After that it's only
to restart explorer and you have the new drive ready to use. Unfortunately -
if you disconnect the drive, then you have to reassign the rive letter -
while the last used is already unavailable - you pick another one which
increase number of drives visible in Explorer.
It doesn't make life any easier.

I would appreciate any guidance on how to enable the PnP service.
PS. Before you ask - Yes PnP service is started.

Hi There,

Andrew, thanks for your help. Unfortunately I couldn't follow the steps to
the end. But possibly you were right. The fix didn't work as I had the SP3
there already. When trying the SFC way though, it as me to replace a file -
just that it asked mi to supply XP disk two which I didn't have. So I ended
up finding a Media center download that could take my Windows key and simply
reinstall it.
But anyway - greatly appreciate your help.
