Plug and Play doesn't work

Hi,

I have this problem with PNP devices using USB connection
like camera, webcam and printer. I can't simply plug the
device into the usb .. my system doesn't recognise it.
The only way for the system to recognise it is to plug it
in BEFORE starting / rebooting. And if I unplug the
device while the system is running, I can't plug it back
on again as the same old problem of not being recognised
by the system recur. I am also not able to plug a
thumbdrive when the system is already running. Is it
something to do with the USB?

Appreciate if someone can help me out. Thanks!

What does device manager say about the USB?

Did XP load anything for USB? (drivers)?

The USB devices, you're using if theyre not
USB 2. Did you install the drivers for them?
if the drivers came on CD?

Are the USB device/s you have 1.1 or USB 2?

Also is PNP on YES in the BIOS? Does the BIOS
have the PNP option somewhere? Go into the BIOS
find the PNP option if its on NO, change it to YES
save the settings and reboot.

Also, I have a nitpick with USB Webcam auto-detection.

Usually, USB non-printing devices are detected as *audio* (not picture or
video) devices, and, as such, the manufacturer's drivers are *required*.
(This is not true of printers, pointing devices, and HID (Human Interface
Device) group devices (joysticks, gamepads, etc.), but is also true of
scanners/multi-function devices, and some mice.)

I have usually not had problems installing USB printers (in fact, as a
whole, printers are my least problematical device to install).

True Chris.

This creative digital cam appears under
imaging devices. So does the scanner
in XP. And the printer, which is an HP photo printer
creates an entry of its own called Dot4 HPZ12
DOt4print HPZ12 / Dot4USB HPZ12. And
doesnt even appear under printers (most probably
coz it's USB2). I dont know. The mouse falls
under HID as its a MS optical mouse.
