Plextor 52x24x52

Hi,

I use an old PII-266Mhz system with HP 8210 CD-rewriter.
I wanna purchase a Plextor 52x24x52 CD-rewriter to replace the old one, but
I'm not sure if it will work fine with the old PII box (224 Mb workstorage
and 66 Mhz systembusspeed).
Does somebody know the system requirements for this rewriter?
And is somebody experienced with such a configuration?

Regards,
ahey.

It will work but there are a couple of issues...

You need to make sure the drive is using DMA (consult Device Manager
in windows) since a PII-266 can't even make a good try at high-speed
burning without DMA working (though DMA is highly preferred with any
speed system).

The maximal burn speed will be somewhat slowed by the hard drive
speed. The CDRW drivet has a buffer-underrun protection so the discs
shouldn't become coasters, but it will have to stop burning and
restart each time the data is interrupted (it is automated, not
something requiring user intervention), waiting for the hard drive to
deliver. This doesn't necessarily mean you want to set the the CDRW
drive to burn at a few low speed, which would be a more important
thing to do if burning lower quality media that can't tolerate high
burn speeds.

If you had been considering purchasing a new hard drive, you now have
another reason to do so, though the system as-is will be able to use,
make CDRs with the new CDRW drive.
