I re-formatted the hard drive from Window XP Pro back to Win XP Home SP1.
WinXP home was original operating system installed by Dell when I purchased
the computer.

After re-formatted the HDD using Dell Reinstallation CD, I ended up with this:

This is what shows up every time I start up the computer.

The question is how do I delete WinXP Pro? so it won't start with choosing
which operating system to select.

Thanks!

Do the following:

1. Start | Control Panel | System | Advanced
2. Click on Settings button under Startup and Recovery section
3. Click on the Edit Button
4. Delete the Microsoft Windows XP Professional entry
5. Click on File | Close and click on OK to save
6. Uncheck Timeout

While you're in there, uncheck Automatically reboot on failure
Also, uncheck Overwrite Dump File option and have Full Dump done for Crash
dumps.

1. Login to Windows XP Home edition.
2. Right-click on My Computer and choose Properties
3. Click the Advanced tab. Click the Settings button under Startup and
Recovery options.
4. The "Default Operating System" should be "Windows XP Home" which is
already selected as shown in Image, if it is not then select it from the drop
down menu and uncheck the "Time to display list of operating systems" option.

Meanwhile, you can also modify your BOOT.INI file by clicking the Edit
button from the same Window and delete the Windows XP Professional line. E.g.

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT

Do it carefully.

Hope this help, let us know!

From Start | Run type msconfig, click ok. On the boot.ini tab click on
check all boot paths. It will find the invalid XP Pro path and offer to
remove it for you.

Here are 2 ways (1st recommended):

1. Start > Run
Type msconfig > Click OK
Go to "BOOT.INI" tab
Click the button "Check all boot paths"
Follow the instructions to remove the invalid line.

2. Click Start > Run > Copy/Paste the following line and click OK:
bootcfg /delete /ID 2

As a precaution, no matter which step you choose, run the first step again.

As an Addendum to this question:

How do you remove a line when both say the same thing? A friend has a system
that comes up with choose either of two identical lines. One of them is
duplicate or (he thinks) a re-install. The problem is, which one?

He needs to check the partition information for each line and see if they
are the same. If the are totally identical, he can remove one of them.

THEY MUST BE TOTALLY IDENTICAL!

If you had reformatted the drive, it would have deleted everything on it.
And if you subsequently installed XP Home, there could not possibly be any
reference to XP Professional on your drive.

Therefore, you did *not* reformat the drive. The first step in solving your
problem is determining exactly what you did. Please describe the procedure
you followed in as much detail as possible.

Delete the partition on the hard disk first.

Inserted Dell Reinstallation CD in CD rom drive and set boot sequence to CD
drive then re-start.

Followed the instructions on install WinXP and made a quick format NFTS,
not FAT 32.

Worked fine until the problem with selecting one of two operating system
came up.

It has been solved already. I followed NewsScience's 1st reply above.

on his 1st reply, it worked.

Its now all good. Will upgrade to WinXP Pro SP2.
