Greetings

I formatted my HDD & clean installed WinXP
Now each time i boot-up i get a screen message
"Please select operating system to start"
Anyone know why this is happening & how to fix please

There's no other OS on my system.
There are 2 OS options to choose from on the screen - both winxp
If I don't hit 'enter' the system starts after x seconds as normal
I have SP2 loaded

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Click on the BOOT.INI tab and then click on "Check All Boot Paths"
to delete incorrect boot paths.

If the above does not work for you, then:

Right-click MY COMPUTER and select:

Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings > Edit

CAREFULLY edit your boot.ini file.
Your boot.ini file should then look similar to this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

Hi, Carey - and Martin.

Correct, except...

In Boot.ini, in the line that points to the boot folder, the rdisk(#) refers
to the HDDs, starting with ZERO; partition(#) refers to the volume (primary
partition or logical drive in an extended partition) starting with ONE on
each HDD.

So the line under [operating systems] would be:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect

Now the line will match the default under [boot loader], referring to the
first partition on the first physical drive.

You did not delete the previous partition and do a clean
install. You did a dual boot installation.

Suggest that you reinstall again and this time delete all
partitions, create what ever partitions you want and then do
a clean install.

Thanks Carey - the above didn't work. the system didn't like it

I then tried your second suggestion with RCs amendment (Thanks RC) it
seems to be behaving properly now - fingers crossed

Go to Control Panel - System - Advanced page.

In Startup and Error recovery click Settings; in that click Edit.

That loads the boot.ini file into Notepad; at the bottom in [Operating
Systems] will be two lines, one for each option in the menu; delete the
one you do not want
