PLEASE HELP - Windows Messenger sign-in problem

B

BillW

When attempting to sign into Windows Messenger I get the following message:
"Signing in to .NET Messenger Service failed because the password is
incorrect or the sign-in name does not exist." I can sign directly into my
passport account using my sign-in name and password, but Messenger will not
recognize them. I'm running on XP Home Edition and have downloaded both
Messenger 4.7 and 5.0. Under 5.0, I can log in, but other applications had
problems (namely Adobe Reader). 4.7 runs okay with other application, but
will not let me log in. I am currently running Messenger 4.7. Thank you
for your help.

Thank you, Phil. I reset my password and still get the same message when
attempting to log into Messenger.

Did you actually goto the .net member services website and change your
password? That's what I meant.
If you did that then make sure your running version 4.7.2 or higher. Older
versions won't work.
If all else fails try uninstalling messenger, thyen goto windows update and
reinstall it.
To uninstall Messenger, try this from Johathan Kay:
Close down Messenger (right click the messenger icon in the notification
area/system tray and click close). Then click the start button, then
click Run and type in (copy-paste if you like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK. Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed
instructions and screenshots, go to,

Will I have a problem if I'm trying to access through a home network. I
have 2 XP computers running through a router for both home network and
internet access. One of the 2 computers is okay on both 4.7 and 5.0
Messenger. The 2nd computer is the one having problems. Also, I changed
the password at www.passport.com. Thanks again for your help.

No the router shouldn't be causing any probs. I have the same type of setup.
Maybe try the uninstall / reinstall of 4.7. Or stick with 5.0. That's what I
use and also have adobe reader 6.0 and they work fine when on the same
machine.

5.0 works fine on both computers. The problem I encountered on this
computer is when I attempted to open a PDF file on a web page, an Install
Messenger 5.0" dialog box started and came up with an error. The error
message was in a dialog box with an OK button. When I clicked on the OK
button, it attempted again to install Messenger 5.0. The only way I could
get the cycle to stop was shutting down my computer. Then I installed 4.7
and continue to get this problem. My other computer is running 5.0 without
any problems. Thanks again.

Forgot to mention that only on the problem computer do I get a conflict when
installing 5.0. It says to close the program using CCAPP.exe or I will have
to restart my computer after installing 5.0. Being that I don't know what
program has CCAPP.exe open, I tell it to continue and then I am asked to
restart - which I do. My other computer did not have that problem.

Phil,

I should have done what you told me to do 2 hours ago. To be honest, I was
afraid to execute the run command. Anything that goes into the Run area
with %, &, etc., scares me. Anyway, I uninstalled as you suggested and
installed Messenger 5.0. Everything works now. No more problems with Adobe
and I can log into Messenger. Thank you, Phil. I really, really appreciate
your help.
