Please HELP!!! Me - Microsoft can't identify My Operating System.

I am having a Problem installing a Wireless Mouse on a HP L2000 Laptop
W/XP-SP2. It seems the Install process can't identify the Operating
System. No Matter what Mouse I try it always ends up with "Unknown
device" flagged with a Yellow !. Even if I try doing it Manually and
Pointing to Windows/inf. It still gets the same result.
I even get the same error when I go to Microsoft to try to get help
SAYS Unidentified System or to that effect
Can Anyone point me in the Right Direction for a FIX ??????

To Clarify the Situation.
I can boot my Laptop with no Problem.
I get the Unidentified System when I go to Microsoft's page on the WEB.
I spent half a day with HP and they couldn't come up with a way to fix
the Mouse Install problem
I can and have Installed the Same mouse on my Main Dual Boot Dell
L1000R. I am running WinME there but I can boot into XP SP1 when I need
to fix other computers
I need to find out how a Web Page Determines what Operating system one
is Running.
Is there another Newsgroup that deals with XP on a deeper basis

Most things look at the registry entry for that.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
Product Name is one

I ran REGEDIT on the HP and went to the above.
A Ton of stuff but don't have a clue as what is causing the Problem
Thanks

There's only one "ProductName" value under that key. What does yours read?

They don't seem to be the Answer.
I am Getting the Exact phrase quoted below
"Your operating system cannot be detected"

The MSKB doesn't have that exact error message anywhere. Even a Google
Groups search found just a couple of references.

http://groups.google.com/groups/search?q="Your+operating+system+cannot+be+detected"&qt_s=Search

There are quite a few more under a Google Web search.

http://www.google.com/search?q="Your+operating+system+cannot+be+detected"&qt_s=Search&sa=N&tab=gw

Maybe if you turn off your firewall..
