please help CD-RW problem

Hi

I have tried to post this a few time recently and still
have not found a solution over the last 2 months! So
please bear with me to read what I have tried so far.

I am running XP Home and recently I have lost my
recording tab under properties for my CD-RW drive so I
cannot drag and drop into the drive as I could a couple
of months ago or so.

I need to get at it to check that enable CD recording is
checked.

I have checked the key in the registry and set drive type
to 2 (as it was anyway) and this has made no difference.

I have also checked that IMAPI cd burning is running in
services.

I have also checked for a new driver (drive Toshiba SD-
R5112) but Toshiba say that it is natively supported by
the driver that comes with XP (ie the one im using).

The drive burns fine with specialist software but this is
inconvenient as it so much slower.

On someone's advice I have also tried using ISOrecorder
to see if that would 'kick-start' XP into recognising the
drive as recordable but it didnt recognise a recordable
drive either. Presumably because it uses XP to actually
do the recording.

I have also determined whether I installed Hi

KB320174 which I am aware could cause this problem.

If anyone could suggest anyway I might get the recording
tab back I would be really grateful as I really think Ive
tried everything now.

Cheers.

Brilliant, a new and simple method of posting the same
question twice. Now the answer,
Open the device manager and remove the drives and reboot.
They will be redetected and the drivers installed.

Also, XP's built-in burning software does not do drag and
drop, you need to have a third-party program such as sold by
Roxio or Nero, there are others but those are the best
known.

You need packet writing to do drag and drop, XP's software
does session writing.

I have posted the question again because I did not get a
solution.

I have tried your suggested solution. Drive is detected
but same problems occurs - XP does not recognise as
recordable drive.

By drag and drop I mean into the Explorer window of the
CD drive. I realise XP does session writing.

Thank you.

Hi, Henry.

Do you have Nero's InCD - or Roxio's DragToDisk? Or some other
"packet-writing" program? Roxio and Nero (and others) sell both session
writing and packet writing programs. InCD and/or DragToDisk is what you
need for what you want to do.

I can't see that your post ever mentioned "packet writing". That software
is what you need to pre-format your CD-RW and then use it like "a big
floppy" or a slow hard drive. In other words, drag-n-drop files to and from
the CD.

Note that this is exactly what Jim told you, but you never said what
software you are using OTHER than WinXP itself - which doesn't natively
support packet writing.

I am having the EXACT same problem.... but mine started
after I installed the AUTOMATIC UPDATES today. I donnot
see the WRITE THESE FILES TO CD in explorer as I use to.
Have you come up with any solutions yet? How frustrating
this is... I used that feature DAILY.

Any input would be greatly appreciated, and I will let
you know if I find anything out.

Thanks,

Thanks for your help, but I am not aiming to do packet
writing. (I do have Roxio and Sonic Record Now and they
both work fine.) I need to get the native XP session
writing to work, ie by enabling cd writing in the
recording tab that should appear when I right click on
the drive in my computer.

try
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316529
(316529) - When you attempt to record (burn) data to a
compact disc recordable (CD-R) drive or compact disc
rewritable (CD-RW) drive, you may not have the option to
send data to the CD-ROM drive. When you view the properties
of the CD-R drive or CD-RW drive, you...

Do a search on Help & Support for "cd-rw" and you'll get
lots of help.
