Okay so I have no idea what I did, but I was on the computer, playing a game
(I have no internet connection on this computer) and I got the flicker of
death that advised me that vista was going into black mode. And now no
matter what I do windows explorer will not load at startup, I have to go in
through the task manager and manually open the program. I have tried
everything I can think of... Sytem restore, startup restore, reinstalling
vista, anti virus scans, startup program repairs, system tools, etc. Is this
another Vista falter that we just have to live with, or is there a way to fix
it?

For starters, check this key in the Registry Editor:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

In the right pane, make sure there is a REG_SZ Type with a value Name
"Shell" (no quotation marks) that has value Data "explorer.exe" (no
quotation marks).

Do you have a genuine version of Vista?

The "Black Death" for non-genuine versions started recently.

The "Black Death" is characterized by "reduced functionality" after one hour
of use, followed by festering, fungating boils and oozing pustules.

Yes I do, I was purchasing a new computer and Wanted to have xp media center
as the OS, but I let the sales guy talk me into vista, so now I'm stuck with
it! It came pre-installed on my new Dell computer and came with the
re-install disk with the shiny genuine sticker.
