[PL] Ballot and Opinion Poll: ACF Ware Glossary

I think we are not in a hurry, yet. So I put it up to the group that both
'definitions' of adware proposed are in fact linguistic tautologies. ;-)
(They 'define' a word with a variety of itself...)

To be not only destructive I post another suggestion, which I derived from
a proposal I set last year:

Adware: Software that displays or outputs promotional information for
any other version, product or service outside its help system.

Let's see if someone else likes it. (Or follows up with yet another one.)

Hi BeAr,

This is a *voting* thread. Alternate Adware definitions can be discussed
in the [PL] Ware Glossary - Annual Review thread.

We need to know the *type* of Adware definition we are striving for -
there is a great divide - is it only "paid" advertising or does it
include "self" advertising? To date discussion hasn't given us the
answer - there has not been enough participation.

I hope many people will participate in this poll. As you said - we're
not in a hurry. The exact wording of the Adware definition can be
discussed and agreed upon when the *direction* is clear.

I would exempt Belarc from "Adware" (e.g., nagging, popups, intermittent
regular "BUY ME" ads, and "UPdate NOW", etc.)...Belarc doesn't do that.
I never see or hear anything of it until I use it and see it's sorta 'Letterhead'
with a site one can click on if one chooses). They are providing it for free
use, so ones (ads) like that I've no objection to, and see nothing 'wrong' with
them. Just mho.

AFAICT, that one is not included in this poll because it would create
some problem WRT current pricelessware.

KISS - either/or (not multiple choice)

IMO any Ware Glossary change that affects the current PL should be
implemented in January 2006 with the next list. I noted this in the ballot.

ATM I see 6 votes. . .

I'll count the ballots if I see enough votes to make the poll
*meaningful*. (Counting ballots is a lot of work.)

I don't know, and I'm the one who proposed that definition. I also
proposed this one, an attempt to excluded programs that tag their
output with ads:

I wish you wouldn't. The term "adware" here has become an extremely
broad brush to label programs. I think far too broad.

Maybe a program that simply watermarks itself on output is
acceptable here. That's fine, but it's adware. I say "should be
labeled as such" but ... People overreact to that label. Adware
doesn't *have* to include spyware.
Adware: Software which displays advertising while it is running.

And I consider this an Ad , a software enforced addendum to a post
recently -

"--
I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users.
It has removed 1 spam emails to date.
Paying users do not have this message in their emails.
Try www.SPAMfighter.com for free now!"
AFAICT, that one is not included in this poll because it would create
some problem WRT current pricelessware.

I'm coming from a different point of reference. Adware, which is
just logoware, may be appropriate for PL, definitely for discussion
in this group.

Not all adware is spyware.

I proposed it; I didn't advocate it. When I proposed it, I was hoping
to spur some discussion of the issue. Discussion about the definitions
seems hard to come by this time around.

I'm not sure what you mean -- you seem to be arguing for a broad
definition, one that includes more software rather than less.
Maybe a program that simply watermarks itself on output is
acceptable here. That's fine, but it's adware. I say "should be
labeled as such" but ... People overreact to that label. Adware
doesn't *have* to include spyware.

I agree. Adware is not a subset of spyware or vice versa.

I agree. I think it would be good to explicitly include such apps in
the definition. Alternatively, if the consensus of the group is that
they are not adware, I think the definition should make that explicit.

Note that I was wrong about why it was not included.

Sure. The poll will be a *rough* guide to opinions. There are always
gray/grey ;) areas, apps that are exceptions (13 year Trialware comes to
mind), special circumstances, etc. There's no way to cover all the
possibilities in a poll.

Yes.

I'm not sure what you mean -- you seem to be arguing for a broad
definition, one that includes more software rather than less.

Not an easy answer to your question. (And sorry for the delay in
answering - but work happens).

I do argue for a broader definition fo adware. One to include ads
placed in a programs output.

I don't argue that the mere label adware should be the death knell
for programs here.
I agree. Adware is not a subset of spyware or vice versa.

I agree. I think it would be good to explicitly include such apps in
the definition. Alternatively, if the consensus of the group is that
they are not adware, I think the definition should make that explicit.

I will ponder a suggestion.

Sorry for the delay to answer.
I see what you mean. Because of last years discussion I intentionally
left *pure* self-promotion. (It would have been 'for itself, any other
version, product or service'). Following a broader definition, last year
some programs nearly got fired from PWL for innocently mentioning a bit
more information than their name. (Like a web address for contacts.)
I certainly don't like *that*.

I can understand.
Maybe a second sentence on my definition could deal with such cases:

'Self-promotion *may* classify a program as Adware, especially if done
obtrusive.'

If it's a benign advertisment (a watermark for instance), it may be
unobtrusive.

Hey there,

Sure. The poll will be a *rough* guide to opinions. There are always
gray/grey ;) areas, apps that are exceptions (13 year Trialware comes to
mind), special circumstances, etc. There's no way to cover all the
possibilities in a poll.

Yeah, I figured I'd better cover my butt. I consider myself basically
a purist when it comes to my own freeware choices, but will
occasionally use things that don't quite live up to my purist
standards as long as the link/button/ad isn't "in my face" and if the
software is simply so good that I must use it. I realize that a lot of
the time people need to describe what they're looking for, sometimes
by pointing to a commercial program in their request to give us a
better idea of exactly what they're looking for, so no harm done. If,
however, someone was pushing a commercial program in here, I'd go with
e) above. I figured if the vote was close, it would be better to
mention that mine go "both ways" depending on circumstance. :)
