Pixel Size of Pictures to be Viewed on TV

G

Guest

I scanned off my old slides using Photo Shop CS3. I then created a DVD using
Microsoft Movie Maker, to be viewed on my 50" HD Widescreen TV.
My pictures are horizontal and vertical.
I tried using dimensions of 560 w x 899 h (vertical) and 560 h x 899 w
(horizontal) with a DPI of 150.
The pictures are pretty sharp when I test run them using Microsoft Media
Center, but when I view them on my big TV, they are not as sharp.

What can I do to make these pictures appear sharper on the tv screen?

I tried increasing the DPI to 300, but it didn't look any different than the
150.

What am I missing?

Maybe using a custom profile
would improve the quality:

I forgot to tell you, I am using Vista.
I have Movie Maker 6.

Ok...why are you posting in
a Windows XP newsgroup?

Try the following newsgroup:

BTW...the profiles work for Vista.

There's lots of info on PapaJohn's
site...some time spent there would
be a good idea.

I notice when saving to DVD, under "Other Settings" there is

PapaJohn - WMV for DVD(NTSC) as an option.

I have used that setting with some of my projects.......photos only.

Seems to give a clear picture on 36" TV

Any other profile that may be better?

Your TV is surely able to handle 1080p. So, why not send it that size of an
image?
Ignore dpi, it is just a scale factor.

The fine manual for my Sharp HDTV discusses this issue at great length.

Movie Maker can't do that without a
Custom Profile.

Thanks John

I had previously downloaded some profiles from PapaJohn's site including the one
mentioned.

Just wondering why that particular profile was included with MM 2.1

Is it included by default or did MM pick it up from the profiles I had
downloaded which are sitting in a folder?

It's not included. Apparently MM 2.1 is accessing
the folder where you saved the downloaded profile.

C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\Profiles

That's it! Spot on.

I had forgotten where I had stored the D/L's profiles.

MM has found two out of three of those profiles in the Shared folder.

PapaJohnn-WMV-for-DVD-NTSC.prx

SlideShow-1024x768WMV9.prx

Strange that PapaJohnn-WMV-for-DVD-PAL.prx in same folder is not picked up
as a choice of profile.

But I confess to harbouring a great deal of ignorance about these things<g>

=============================
The PAL profiles won't show up unless you
make a change under...Tools / Options /
Advanced tab / Video Properties...

Tick...PAL instead of NTSC.
