php with fp 2002 vs. 2003

If I have a "regular" .htm page. graphics and what not and rename it to
whatever.php it will show in design view in FrontPage 2002 but in fp 2003
there is no "views" tab and seems to be only available in "code view". I'm
not talking about running code I just mean the html elements that make up
the page.

Is there a way to make fp 2003 display pages with the .php extension
similarly to the way fp 2002 does?

Choose Tools, Options, Configure Editors.

Scroll down to PHP and select thta entry.

Select FrontPage (Open as HTML), and click Make Default.

Excellent!
That did the trick. I knew there had to be something and that it'd be
unlikely for fp 2002 to have a capability that fp 2003 lacked.

But I guess getting the "themes" to stick on a php page is out of the
question?

It works for me. Here's what I tried.

1. Save a new file with a .php filename extension.
2. Open the .php file.
3. Display the Themes task pane and select a Theme.
4. Save and close the .php page.
5. Open the .php page. The Theme is still there.

FWIW, though, I think most designers capable of writing PHP code
would prefer using linked CSS file rather than Themes.

I'll have to try it again. (I'll post my findings).
I understand and agree with you about php people preferring style sheets
etc. to a FrontPage them. the reason I'm trying to make it work is I'm
trying to make a rudimentary (but nice) content management system for what
were formerly FrontPage webs, so I need to make sure that using my system
will allow the web to stay virtually as it was but with "live edit"
capability.

when I'm renaming my htm pages to php it seems to be losing the theme that
was applied. it looks OK in design view but it's totally lost in "preview
in a browser".
