Photo Story 3 output to Pocket PC

Guest

When I try to play the output movie file from Photo Story 3 on my pocket PC
media player (Version 8.5 Build 12177) only the sound plays no video.
Even the clips that Microsoft provided as example do this.

Anyone else have this problem or even better a fix?

Correct me if I am wrong but it is only for Windows XP, not the Pocket PC.

Thanks for your help,
Patrick

According to the specs at the following site, the
completed Photo Story should play on WMP 7
or better.

However...for Pocket PC...you may need
Windows Media Player 10 Mobile as discussed
at the following site:

It may be worth a try to experiment with the
various save options.

You may correct, but when I downloaded PS 3 on my PC (not pocket PC and I am
on XP) I reveived a message that I first had to download version 10 to get
PS3 to work.

The site you cited clearly says version 10 is needed.
In fact, PS1 and PS2 required version 9, so obviously version 7 is not going
to work. Maybe it will work on a pocket PC (I have no idea what this is) but
not on XP on a PC.

Don't blame me...I'm just sharing the info
from MS. The following site clearly states
that WMP10 is required for *creating* a Photo
Story but they will play with WMP7. The original
question was about *playing* a Photo Story...
not creating one.

I am not blaming anybody.
Indeed, creating and viewing a PS3 file can require different resources.
As far I know PS1 required WMP9 to create and view. Now PS3 requires WMP10
to create, this is clear. But maybe you can view a PS3 file created on WMP10
with an earlier version of WMP. I doubt it but I cannot verify this since I
am WMP10.

Apparently reading the info at the link I
posted is too much trouble.

Here's what it says....

"Watch it at home: Enjoy your stories on any
PC with Windows Media Player 7 or higher"

This same requirement applies to playing all
versions of Photo Story files.

This same requirement applies to playing all
versions of Photo Story files.

This is from the help file: "If you want to play your stories on
portable devices that do not have Windows Media Player 10 Mobile
installed, you can use Microsoft Windows Movie Maker to import your
story, and then save it by using the Windows Movie Maker Pocket PC profile."

I did some experimenting and indeed it seems to be true. I was not able
to create a WMV file that could be played on my iPAQ 2215 (only
available with WMP 9). As reported by an earlier poster, the audio plays
but the video remains black. I tried using Nero to re-encode the file,
but Nero puts up a message saying their license doesn't allow them to
re-encode WMA files. I then used MovieMaker2 to re-encode the file to
320 x 240 at 30fps. The result was a bit choppy, but it did play on my
iPAQ. I will run further re-encoding experiments tomorrow, but at this
time I will probably use PhotoStory 2 to create files for my iPAQ
(although the new features of PhotoStory 3 are very alluring).

John and Yves,

WMP7 itself cannot play Photostory3 files. It needs the WMV9 codec to do so.
This is ok on PCs where the codec is available and gets downloaded. However
the WMV9 codec is not available for PocketPCs. This can only be obtained for
PocketPCs with Media Player 10 mobile.

Hence both of you are correct :)

Minimum required to play PS3 files:
On PCs: WMP7 + WMV9 codec
On PocketPCs: WMP10mobile

Thanks for this Barry.
I did look through the help file but missed this.
I have also tried it and it does work but the file does loose some of its
quality.

I was wondering, it looks like Microsoft is not releaseing Media Player 10
as a download, only pre-installed on new devices. Is this your understanding
as well?

Thanks Patrick

That's what the web site says: "Windows Media Player 10 Mobile will be
available on many new Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition–based
Smartphones and Pocket PCs beginning this fall. These devices will come
in various shapes and sizes designed to fit your lifestyle and budget.
Windows Media Player 10 Mobile is not available for download from
Microsoft." - http://makeashorterlink.com/?S5B3348A9

I'm not sure that a Pocket PC is included under "any PC." :)

It's not and no one said it was. This thread
became confusing in the beginning because
the requirements for PCs and Pocket PCs
are not the same.
