Please...turn off your caps lock...it makes
your message hard to read.

Maybe the following info will help:

It happens occasionally to most anyone who
is trying to multiple select by holding the Ctrl
or Shift key while left clicking to select the
image files.

The copies are created when you fail to
completely release the mouse button before
you move the pointer to another file. If a group
of selected files is dragged...even the slightest
bit...the next mouse click will produce copies
of all the previously highlighted files.

It's somewhat easier if you have your Folder
Options set to Single Click...this way you can
select/deselect a file with just a mouse over
and you don't have to click. For multiples you
still have to hold...Ctrl or Shift.

No click...no drag...no copy...maybe that's
your solution.

How to search for and delete unwanted "copies"
of your image files.

Open the folder that the images are saved in and
left click the "Search" button on your toolbar.

(If you are viewing the files from within an editing
program and do not know where the folder is...right
click one of the image files and from the menu...
choose...Properties. The path to the folder will be
on the "General" tab at "Location".)

In the search pane...select..."All files and folders"

In the "All or part of the file name" field...enter...

*copy

(Yes. you need the asterisk.)

Now...left click the "Search" button.

When the search is complete...go to...Edit / Select All...

Then go to...File / Delete.

You will see a dialog box asking you if you are sure
you wish to delete the files...click Yes.

Now...left click the "Back" button on your toolbar.

Now the remaining files should be your originals.

If you deleted the wrong files...recover them from
your recycle bin now.

Hi John I am having the same problem, everytime I delete a photo I get
another copy - I am in "My Photos" which opens up with a copy of all my
photos on screen - I have tried deleting one at time and in groups - right
clicking the mouse or deleting from the program - any way I get copies -- I
tried to follow the instructions below - I clicked on the photo found
properties saw a tab "general" but there was no place to type *copy -- did
not find any search button etc? would appreciate any info

The best way that I've found to delete the copies is to go to the folder
containing the pictures. Then click View, Details. Press the letter C to
take your cursor to files beginning with that letter. If this file is named
Copy of, then start here and if not, use your down arrow key to get to the
first "copy of" file that you want to get rid of. With this file
highlighted, press and hold the Shift key and then hold your down arrow
until you are at the last "copy of" file. You can also use the page down
key to get there a bit faster. Do not release the Shift key until all of
the files that you want to remove are highlighted. Do NOT touch the mouse!

Once all of these files are highlighted, press the Delete key on your
keyboard.

The instructions in the quoted
message below explain what's
causing the unwanted copies.

To find all the unwanted copies...
try the following:

One way to find your search pane
is go to...Start button / Search.

You will see:
"What do you want to search for?"

Click: "All files and folders"...

In the "All or part of the file name" field...
enter... "copy of" (without the quotes)

In the "Look in" field...select the Drive
or Folder that you wish to search.
("Local Hard Drive (C:)"...I would suspect)

Click the "Search" button.

The found files will appear in the right pane.

Scroll through them to be sure these are
the files you wish to delete.

Go to...Edit / Select All

Now go to...File / Delete

Hi John,

many thanks for your help in deleting my thousands of copies. I was going
crazy. I still, though, am not sure how to keep that from happening. I am
either trying to put a portion of my photos from a digital card into a new
folder or copying to a CD and always get the extra copies. Could you clarify
how to just do what I want it to do? Thank you.

Sincerely,
Robin

You're welcome.

Sorry, but beyond the steps I already posted,
I'm not sure what else to tell you. If you Drag
and drop or copy and paste from your memory
card to a folder on your hard drive you should
be successful. BTW...if you're trying to multiple
select by holding Ctrl or Shift while clicking...that's
how you are creating the copies. Setting your
folder options to single click and selecting with
a mouse over instead of clicking should solve
the problem.

Dear John,
I used your other technique, going directly to the picture file and managed
to get the "copies of" deleted. Thanks again.
