"phantom domain" event log errors

We have a native Windows 2000 domain with about 15 servers, all running
Win2000, SP 4. We had an IS guy from another part of the City set up his
secured domain but he could never get AD configured correctly. We had
another IS guy come in and he started from scratch. He renamed the domain
and the servers, configured AD properly and everything has run smoothly for
several months with one exception. 3 of my servers see a particular error in
their event logs that none of the other servers have. These three servers
are all global catalog servers and none of the other servers are. Can
anybody explain why these 3 servers are still looking for the non-existent
domains and tell me how to resolve this?
Thanks

Sounds like the original delete wasn't completely clean.

Perform a metadata clean up using this:

The GCs replicate a partial copy of the domain partition for all domains,
thus only the GCs are getting this error as they're trying to get info.
about that domain in your tree.

The above should sort it.

Sounds like a metadata cleanup problem, when the first IS personel
cleanup/decomiisioned the domain structure, they didnt clean up the
domain/computer objects from the AD configuration partition. You can do
this by using the ntdsutil.exe and delete the DC stamp and Domain objects.
There are certain steps that you should/need to perform if you are
perfoming a decommission of a DC or domain.
the three servers keep referenciing the old domain because that domain
object still exists in the configuration partition of the AD.
