Permissions - Urgent !

T

Thomas

Hi All,

I really need your help because I'm trying to give access
to one file in a subfolder where the user have only right
on this file but not on the rest of the subfolder and the
parent of this subfolder.
I already tried a lot of combinaison with the "Traverse
Folder / Execute File" but always without succes. I also
search a lot on Internet but without success.

I created a shortcut to this file that the user need to
open (because to user cannot browse the folders
structure).
If I give a little too much permission, the user can
browse all the folder structure and see all the files
inside of the structure and if I restrict a little more,
the shortcut don't work anymore and windows propose me to
delete the shortcut because it is wrong.

Could somebody give me the exact permission I have to
apply on the folder structure and the exact permission on
the file (for read only access).

Thank you very much to anybody helping me for this urgent
matter !!!

Hello Thomas,

The following KB may assist -

300691 HOW TO: Set Up a File System for Secure Access in Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=300691

Specifically, you would need to do the following -

1. Turn off inheritence on the folder and files in this folder.

2. On the folder, the user needs the special permissions of Travers
Folder/ Execute File and needs List Folder/ Read Data and make sure you
change the Apply onto drop down menu to This Folder Only.

3. On the file, the user needs the Read permission. Make sure you remove
that user from having access to the other files.

This will give the user specific access to traverse the folder and open
only the specified file. Any other files he tries to open will give him an
Access Denied.

Best regards,
