permissions problem on network re: share folders

Computer1: XP Pro desktop
Computer2: XP Pro desktop
Computer3: XP Pro laptop (that was just formatted, clean install)

For the past year the above computers have been networked from a
netgear router. I have successfully had shared folders on each
computer and given full write access to each of them.. I have
copied/cut/pasted files/folders at will from each computer to another
using shared folders with full access....

just last week, I discovered that computer1 (when accessed via the
network by computer2 or computer3) would behave as though there are
permission problems.. I could not MOVE, CUT, or COPY a file FROM
computer1 to computer2 or 3 if I was ON computer2 or 3....

i could MOVE, CUT, or COPY the same file FROM computer1 if I was ON
computer1 and dumping it into the shared folders on computer2 or 3..

heres where it gets weird... I can be on computer2 or 3 and go into a
shared folder on computer1 and CREATE a folder, CREATE a file, and edit
that file...

another weird thing.... while on computer2, i can take existing files
from computer2 and cut/paste them onto a shared folder on computer1....
it works... then if I try to CUT/COPY the SAME file BACK to
computer2.. it gives the only error I am getting thru this madness:

error copying file or folder

cannot copy <filename>: access is denied

make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is
not currently in use.


basically, I can take a file that has been on Computer2 for years, cut
it into a shared folder on Computer1 and it will successfully paste (or
move) into computer1's shared folder.... then if I try to move it back
to Computer2 (reversing the method) it gives access denied as mentioned
above)... so I have to physically get on Computer1 and move the file
back to Computer2...

also...

I just noticed that if I am on computer2 and create a file (.txt) on a
computer1 shared folder, I can CUT it over to computer2... its as
though only newly created files can be moved... not old ones....

through this problem, i can still cut/copy/move/paste files into shared
folders to and from computer2 and computer3.......

i have checked several settings under user management (activated guest
account and confirmed that restrictanonymous is set to 0 in
registry).....

ANY suggestions appreciated.. very frustrating... Thanks!!

Asynchronous access / visibility is a very commonly reported problem here. One
of the most common causes of this problem would be a misconfigured or overlooked
personal firewall, or other security component. The restrictanonymous setting is
one of several items to check. There are several other possibilities too, and
any might be the cause of your problem. Read this article with an open mind.

Sorry for lack of information on first post... my laptop isnt home
right now but here are ipconfig/browstat from the other 2.. i think you
may be onto something with the browstat return on the problem
PC(Computer1)... for some reason, running browstat on Computer1 is not
returning anything mentioning itself.. could not open key in reg
doesnt sound good either.... here are the logs:

OK, if Computer3 is part of the symptoms "could not MOVE, CUT, or COPY a file
FROM computer1 to computer2 or 3 if I was ON computer2 or 3....", then you'll
have to diagnose the problem when it's attached to the network. There is no way
that we can diagnose the problem without the proper diagnostics.
1) Attach Computer3 to the network.
2) Wait an hour (browser latency period).
3) Extract "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from all 3 computers.
4) Don't make any changes to the network until additional diagnostics can be
done (per examination of "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all").

Has one of your computers recently been configured with a firewall lately?
B/c I had this exact same problem on my network, and it was all because of my
firewall's level was set so high on one of my computers that it would only
allow me to see my other workstations on my network, but when I would try to
access them in my workgroup it would give me the permissions error. Check it
out, it could be something so simple your firewall being set so high that
seems to cause all of your headaches...

I have a similar problem problem with *.exe copies. I have an XP Home system
on a desktop and a XP Pro system on another desktop.

While processing on my XP Pro system I can copy any type of file from my XP
Pro to my XP home and from my XP Home to my XP Pro system. If I am on my XP
Home system I can only copy non *.exe files from my XP Pro system to my XP
Home system. If I try and copy an *.exe file, I get the access denied
message. I can copy *.jpeg and any no exe file.

I have also set up an XP Pro system to another XP Pro system and in this
enviroment I can only copy non *.exe files. Any other file extension I can
copy from either system to the other system.

This appears to be an XP Pro system problem. I have used both types of
systems on a wireless network and a wired network thru a Linksys and D-Link
router. The effect is the same on both enviroments.

Does anybody understand why this is happening.
