performance monitoring configuration and errors.

Hello,

In win2K there's a service called "Performance Logs and Alerts" which I try
to start.
It starts without an error, then stops. No error message.

I want to do some performance benchmarking, and can use the performance tool
in real-time mode, but when trying to schedule it (so that logs are created)
it fails.

The first point would be whether this service "Performance logs and alerts"
is required or not for the "batching" as opposed to real-time use of
performance logging on-screen?

Event viewer application log errors are as following when trying to start
the "counter log" created using Performance:
2003 followed by

1000,
1008,
2001
1010
2003
4313.

As a closing comment, presumably if a service isn't running (e.g. ftp), the
performance logging tool can handle this?

I have tried this utility but get an error message:-

"Remote registry service is not enabled."

Two other conditions for the error don't apply. (not being an administrator
& computer name is invalid).

Does this service have to be enabled for the running of the performance
tool?
I'm not sure why this service would be required.

cheers,
Malcolm.

Control Panel|Services|Remote Registry|General and set the startup type to
'Automatic'

AFAIK you can't schedule performance monitoring in Windows 2000

Hi,

when I mention "schedule" I mean going to the performance bit of Win2k and
setting some counters and running this. i.e. basic use of the performance
tool.
It runs ok on screen, but not when logging the output. :(

The operating system will start the service when required. Such as when you
start a counter, trace log or alert.

The event ID's you posted are mostly useless without the rest of the error.

When you view the logged events in Event Viewer (double-click them in the
right-hand pane) in the upper right corner, third button down is a copy to
clipboard, then you can paste in the body of a reply message.

Also any System Log events (that are a Type: 'Error' or 'Warning') since
last boot so we can see all of the event detail.

Ok, that's useful. would the way ahead be to disable the counters listed in
the errors (if that's possible with a one-to-one relationship between
counters and services) and retry? Would the exception codes for the other
errors be useful?

cheers.

D

Dave Patrick

Yes, in general I would disable the counters you're not using. The codes may
be moot if you're not using the counter.

Is there anything else that would help resolve this problem? It's the same

Yes. You can tell us what was done recently. Are the event logs now free of
errors? Also give a specific example of something that is not working.

Hi,

There's a service called "Performance Logs and Alerts" which won't remain
"started". When I start it it goes to the "start" status then if I refresh,
it clears, so hasn't remained started. There's no error in event viewer for
this.
I assume that this service has to be started to use the Performance utility
when logging the output - is this correct?

When I use the Performance tool in logging mode I get several application
event messages - as detailed earlier in this thread. The message that
appears is:-

The <file name> log or alert hasn't started. Refresh the log or alert list
to view current status, or see the application event log for any errors"

Going to see the errors gives what I previously posted.

Presumably what it is trying to do is start the service "Performance Logs
and Alerts" but can't.

The operating system will start the service when required. Such as when you
start a counter, trace log or alert.

You may need to use exctrlst.exe (Extensible Counter Listing Tool) from the
resource kit to disable the counters for those services that are disabled or
otherwise not in use.

What specifically are you trying to setup?

Hi,

Here are the steps I'm trying:-

1. On your 2000 server or workstation, click Start, and select Programs,
Administrative Tools, Performance
Monitor.
2. Double-click Performance Logs and Alerts.
3. Select Counter Logs.
4. Right-click a blank area in the Details grid and select New Log Settings.
5. In Name, type the log name and click OK.
6. On the General tab, click Add to select the counters needed.
7. Allow the log to run for at least one day.

You didn't mention the specific counters. Best to use the tool to turn off
those that are not needed. You want to get to a point where Event Viewer is
free of errors.

Hi,

the counters I'd like are:

processor %processor time

memory pages/sec
available bytes

paging file %usage

cheers,
Malcolm.

You can probably turn off most of those others then. You may only need
perfproc, perfdisk, perfos, tcpip, and possibly perfnet
