"Perflib_Perfdata" in Windows\temp folder

Darmok

Hi,

I get 20 to 30 of these Perflib_Perfdata*.dat files in my Windows\Temp
folder every time I check in there.

I've done some research that says they are for "Prefetch" and are
harmless. However, I also understand that optimally, these things are
deleted upon shutdown. Mine are not being deleted.

I could swear that when I first installed XP Pro, I didn't have these
files appearing. Something's changed, I suspect.

Anyone have a solution for getting rid of these files, or prevent them
from being created, or make sure they are deleted at shut down as they
are supposed to be?

TIA

Darmok;
Empty your Temporary folders.
----
"The %SystemRoot%\System32\Perflib_Perfdataxxx.dat files are created by the
System Monitor. When you shutdown normally, the file should be deleted.
If you have an abormal shutdown, these files can become orphaned, and
accumulate on your computer.
Under some yet to be determined circumstances, these files can become
orphaned during normal operation."

Using Disk CleanupDisk Cleanup helps free up space on your hard drive. Disk
Cleanup searches your drive, and then shows you temporary files, Internet cache
files, and unnecessary program files that you can safely delete. You can direct
Disk Cleanup to delete some or all of those files.

To start Disk Cleanup, click Start, click Run, and then type cleanmgr.

Removing unneeded filesWhen running an operating system as complex as Windows,
you may not always know the significance of all the files on your computer.
Sometimes Windows uses files for a specific purpose and then retains them in a
folder designated for temporary files. Alternatively, you may have previously
installed Windows components that you are no longer using. For a variety of
reasons, including running out of space on your hard drive, you may want to
reduce the number of files on your disk, or create more free space, if it can be
done without harming any of your programs.

Use the Windows Disk Cleanup Wizard to perform all of the following tasks to
clear space on your hard disk:
Remove temporary Internet files.
Remove any downloaded program files (ActiveX controls and Java applets
downloaded from the Internet).
Empty the Recycle Bin.
Remove Windows temporary files.
Remove Windows components that you are not using.
Remove installed programs that you no longer use.

Hi Darmok,

In microsoft.public.windowsxp.general you remarked...

You've probably been in "Add/Remove Windows Components" and installed the
"Management and Monitoring Tools". Uninstall them if not required and the
files will stop being produced.
