PCs randamly reboot - showing i8042prt showing in the event viewer

Hi there,

Many of our college networked PCs reboot regularly without warning or error
message being displayed on screen to the user. I think it is due to Error
Message, Event ID 7026 stating "The following boot-start or system-start
driver(s) failed to load: i8042prt".

This entry seems to always appear in the event viewer on the PCs after they
unexpected reboot.

If you have any idea why this happens and more importantly have a solution
to this issue please advise. I see on the internet it could be PS/2
connected, which doesn’t make sense to me as some of the PCs have USB
keyboards and mice connected not PS/2 devices,

All PCs are Win XP SP3 and are automatically updated with WSUS. They are
fully firewall and AV protected with no viruses or Malware/spyware on the PCs.

Any help greatly accepted and appreciated!

Kind regards,

Tony

if you're using a serial mouse, try disabling the PS/2 mouse option in BIOS.
Open device manager and see if there is/are any malfunctioing devices or IRQ
conflict and see which one.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ i8042prt \ Start
Set the Value to (0).
Reboot and see if that will solve the problem.

This can happen with faulty RAM - you can download memtest86 from here:
http://www.memtest86.com/

to see if that is your problem. If it is several machines hoever it is not
likely they would all get corrupt RAM at the same time.

Did this behavior occur after SP3 was installed? And if so, do they have
AMD processors and OEM (usually HP) factory images on the hard drives?

Hi folks,

Thanks for all your input! I'll give your suggestions ago and hopefully I
will get a solution from one of them.

I'm afraid the PCs don't have AMD processors, there're good-old Intels!

Thanks again!

Tony
