PC running slow - stop and start probs

Running XP Professional - PC has started running slow - programs are taking
twice their usual time - takes an eternity to open and shut down - also
failing to recognise external storage devices

Have defragged and chkdsk-ed

What to do ? Should I reload XP? Are there any "diagnostic" programs which
might help - I have run "Regcure" - but no difference in performance

Thanks

You could have computer virus, worm or other nasty.
You could also have a legitimate program that is hogging resources like
the Windows’ file indexing service.
Use control-alt-delete and see if it reveals which program is hogging
resources. If it doesn’t help, then:

If you go to Symantec’s web site, I believe they have tool to check for
computer viruses.
Buying and installing Symantec’s Norton System Works (without GoBack) is
often a fast way to get things fix.
Downloading Microsoft’s Window’s defender (free) will search for Trojan
Horse programs on machine.
Downloading and installing Spybot (free) will also help uncovering
unwanted programs running in background.
Scanning through control panel \ system properties \ device manager
often reveals problems.

Rock,

Sorry to hear that. Try going to Start | Run then type CleanMgr and let the
wizard run. It will take a while to come up maybe even 30 minutes. When it's
done see how much space it will free up and then click ok to let it run.
After that run a defrag (Start | Run type defrag) to clean up the fragmented
disk space. You may also have some adware which is so poorly written it runs
your computer performance in to the ground. Try this program and then update
it, then let it run to clean that stuff out. Diskkeeper will do a nicer job
of clean up your drive. They wrote the freebie defrag that came with the OS.
