Slow Starts

Running XP Home SP2 with a gig of memory.

All of a sudden some programs, including Agent, are very slow to open
nd close. I've run my antivirus and antispyware and registry cleaner
programsand I also defragged.

I ran Chkdsk in read-only mode, and it quit after the second function
telling me that "errors found and chkdsk can't continue".. I then ran
it twice with the /F switch but whatever got fixed didn't solve my
problem.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to what else I can try, short of
reinstallng Windows?

Try Microsoft's BootVis for XP. It has a registry "optimize" feature that
sometimes helps. Doesn't make any registry changes, just reorganizes
sequences for the most part. Sometimes it works wonders, sometimes it's no
help. but it can't hurt.
