PC cant accept any more computers

hello there, i have a little bit of a problem which i
have a feeling can be sorted easily but just dont know
how to do it.

I have two hubs that connect 10 computers. I have set
aside one of the computers to be the main pc. This pc
holds an access database that is shared through all the
computers. This computer also holds the printer.

There is no server involved at all.

Each other computer "map networks" the main pc on drive F:

Every now and then i get message when trying to connect
to the pc saying "the remote computer cannot accept any
more connections". is there a way of increasing the limit
it accepts or another way around it.

Many Thanks

It would help if you told us what OS the computer that hosts the
Access database is running!

I am guessing that it is XP, in which case you are allowed a maximum
of 10 (Pro) or 5 (Home) external connections, and this is not
configurable, nor is there a workaround. I believe that each networked
_file_ _open_ counts as a connection, so it is easy to run out (Access
will have at least two files open per database connection). MS would
like you to use one of their Server OSes on the "server" under these
circumstances, but that is likely to be expensive - a Linux box can be
another option for this sort of role, but I am not sure that you could
use an Access database that way without splitting it and converting
the data side to MySQL.

Yes it is windows XP. 7 of the machines run on
Professional and 3 on Home. the main comp is running on
Home. If switched to professional will this sort all the
problems out.

If you are currently only getting the problem "now and then", the
likelihood is that switching to XP Pro on the database host system
(and thereby doubling the number of permitted incoming connections)
will solve the problem for you. I assume that it must be relatively
unusual for more than a couple of your systems/users actually to be
attached to the database at once, or you should have been having much
more trouble.
