Pasting from a screenshot Into Microsoft Office 2007

I do not know if there is any answers to this question but if there is, I am
sure some of you more advanced experts out there can advise me if there is?

If I make a screenshot of an active page full of text with a Screenshot
Program such as "King Kong Capture" for example, then that screenshot will
automatically go to "My Pictures"
where I purposely designated screenshots to go so I know where they are.

Then I go to "My Pictures" and find the actual screenshot with all the text
that I took using the Capture Program. Can anyone tell me just if there is
a way to extract the text from that screenshot or use a workaround so that I
can then paste it right into a word program such as Microsoft Office 2007 so
that I can then cut, copy, edit or change most anything I want to do once it
is in my Microsoft Office 2007 program?

I would be most grateful let alone amazed if someone out there could tell me
how to do it, if this can be done at all.

A screenshot is a picture, similar to a scanned image. The original text
is no longer stored in the screenshot, just the image (as if you had used
a camera to take a picture of the screen). In order to change a picture
into text, you need OCR software (Optical Character Recognition). The
purpose of OCR software is to recognize text and numbers from images.

How well any OCR software will work depends partly on whether the picture
was saved as a full-resolution bitmap, or a JPG/JPEG (and if so, what JPG
compression options were selected), or some other format; and the
original size of the text in the picture. All of that affects how good
the resolution of the text in the picture will be.

OCR software is not 100% accurate either. Zeros and capital letter O's
(and small letter o's), as well as lowercase letter "l" and the number 1
are hard for OCR software to tell apart, so the software has to guess.
Also, the letter r followed closely by i can be misinterpreted as the
letter n, depending on what font was originally used, and other messes.

Using OCR software to turn images into text can be cumbersome.

You'll need to search the Web for OCR software, and see how much the
various software costs, and determine if it is worth your time and
effort.

You can, perhaps, crop the relevant part(s) of the image and paste the
images into a Word file, if that would suit your needs, but it sounds
like you really want the original text itself. It's better to copy the
text from whatever original programs are displaying the text, instead of
trying to extract the text from a picture that is taken of the text
displayed on the screen.

some more follow on questions.

All I have is a laptop; I have no printer, scanner or copier at the moment
but plan to get this very soon.

So my first follow on question is: - can I buy or download the "OCR
Software" for my laptop?

Secondly, will the software work with just my laptop or will I need in a
printer, scanner or copier to aid in this procedure?

As I said before, if I take a screenshot of a text document, I would like
to, in some way, go through a procedure to get that text into one of my word
documents such as "Wordpad" or "Microsoft Office 2007" so that then I may
have a cursor so I can edit that text and tailor make it to how I want.

If it will work with just my laptop and I can download it, could somebody

You need a scanner and OCR software to capture text off an existing document.
If the text is on the screen in a source, such as a web page, you simply "highlight" the text and go to the Edit Menu on that page and choose "Copy". Then open a word document and put the cursor where you want the text and choose "paste" from the menu. (Note: The keyboard key combinations of Ctrl+C will copy what is highlighted and Ctrl+V will paste that copy into the document.

If you are trying to get editable text off a picture, forget it, as that does not work.

If you have Office, you might already have an OCR program.

I have Office 2003, and it came with Microsoft Office Document Imaging. I
don't know if 2007 comes with it.
It is designed to scan and OCR a document, but if you have .tif or .tiff
files, it will OCR (convert) those files to text and you can send it to a
Word document.

Copy the text from your active page full of text into Word. Why complicate
things. You stated that you already have the text.

Ok, gradually getting there but still need more help.

Dave, I noted what you said about OCR possibly being in my Microsoft Office,
so I checked. I did not find the exact words "Microsoft Office Document
Imaging" so I went on the Web and typed into Google "Free OCR Software". I
then on the title "Free OCR software? You may have it already - Jon
Galloway".

He mentions that he stumbled across the OCR Software within his Windows
Microsoft Office 2003. He gives out specific instructions on how to extract
it and how to use it.

As I mentioned before, I actually have "Microsoft Office 2007" (not 2003, I
do not know whether this makes any difference?)

So I followed his instructions, went to the start menu >all programmes>
Microsoft Office>
Microsoft Office tool's, it then brings up another five programmes and this
is where I get a little bit lost.

The programmes it brings up is - "Digital Certificate for VBA Project",
"Microsoft Clip Organiser", "Microsoft Office 2007 Language", "Microsoft
Office Diagnostics" and "Microsoft Office Picture Manager". Is it one of
these programmes I need? I cannot find a program with the exact words
"Microsoft Office Document Imaging"

Could someone tell me if it is one of these programmes and which one? I
would also be grateful for step by step instructions on how I lift the text
from a screenshot into a word document such as Wordpad or Microsoft Office
2007 which I have and from there once in a word document, I can then edit or
change round words just as if that text were in a word document?

Why bother with a screen shot of a text document if all you want is the
text? Select the text, copy it, switch to Word, and paste.

Okay I have found out how to do it and it IS within my Microsoft Office Word
2007 program I just had to find the advanced features within that program
and check the box that says "Microsoft Office Document Imaging" which was
not enabled at the time. Dave, you were right.

I am afraid it is a little more complicated than your answers Bill and
measekite and I had already tried the ways that you mention.

I eventually fathomed it out myself which needed some 28 commands to
eventually get the text from the screenshot to my Word Program where I can
indeed now edit and change around words and font just as if I had typed it
into my Word Program in the first place.

I would just like to set the record straight on this question. It was not
me that really fathomed this out, I actually got the advice from a great MVP
who gave me the commands so I could perform this operation.

mac, if you get to read this post, I just want to thank you and I am very
grateful for all your help.
