Paste of text, whole screenshot bitmap pastes instead

Product: Powerpoint 2003
OS: Windows XP SP2
Issue: When attempting to cut and paste text from one powerpoint slide
to another, instead an image of the entire screenshot gets copied to
the clipboard. Text is properly highlighted. Problem also occurs if
you cut and paste the text in question. Clipboard seems to get
overwritten by the screenshot regardless. Closing and reopening the
presentation will fix it for a few minutes at times.

We have found that when this occurs on a PC you can duplicate it (on
that PC only) by copying the text, then hitting the DEL key. Upon
deletion of the text box the clipboard is overwritten by a screenshot. Or
if you just hit DEL, the clipboard is overwritten. Do we have 20+ faulty new
keyboards?
I cannot duplicate this on my PC. It is only occurring in less than 5%
of users PC's, however since we are a powerpoint intensive worksite is
is a big work stoppage.

I have tried deleting temp files and powerpoint settings. I have tried
office repair.

I would look for utilities (or any applications, actually) specific to the
problem systems.

Also, althoguh I can't remember exactly where, I do remember reading a
report of strange things like this happening when a user did whatever on his
system -- it was as if his keyboard was faulty. Turns out if he had some
specific game running in the background, it took over (and changed) some
keyboard functions; even though he had it minimized, it still affected the
system.
