I was working on a friends laptop win2000 professional. It was on his
business server. I wanted to retrieve information from another computer on
a LAN in his home.

Well, I added the workgroup and then rebooted. Now his login and password
will not work.

Is there any way to get create a new password? Tech support has not gotten
back to him and he needs the computer to work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If you joined a work group, you may have removed the PC from the domain.
If that is the case you will need to re-join the domain. When you login
to the PC and enter your user name and password, before you could probably
select which domain you were connecting to (or local PC). I suspect you
probably can't do that anymore. To rejoin the domain you will need an
account on the network server capable of allowing you to join the domain.

Hi JE

Was his laptop originally on a Domain? You should log on as the local
administrator and then reset his network settings to point to the correct
workgroup.

How could that be done in his office?

By changing the computer from the domain to a workgroup, you have
destroyed the trust between the domain and the machine. In doing so,
you have also rendered any domain login credentials as invalid. You
need to be physically connected to the domain network, you need to
have administrative privileges to the workstation, and you need to
have administrative privileges on the domain. Then you can add the
machine back on to the domain, after having first deleted the
computer's old domain account (unless you've also renamed the
computer).

Alternatively, you could log in used the built-in Administrator
account and create a local account for your friend's daily use.
