Password protection / encryption

I need to protect a particular file against being accessed by unauthorised
persons. Also the file needs to be transferred between, read and written to
various media (hard disk, USB sticks).

Password protection in MS Excel is considered to be insufficient protection.

Any recommendations please of simple to use, low cost (or free) software
which will do this please?

Hi Bill, what about if you zip or rar your file and password protect that
archive as well. I've heard is pretty hard to unlock a protected rar file.

WinRar is one of the best file compression software you can find, and it's
free to use.
