Partitioning a 200 GB disk with windows 2000 professional

Hello,

I had tried to install windows 2000 profesiional on
a clean 200 GB MAXTOR disk.

The BIOS recognizes this disk as 2000 GB.

My intetntion is to install dual boot system , windows on 130G
size, and that the rest will be Linux.

In the past with 40 GB disk, it first recogizes all
the 40 GB at the partition stage of windows 2000
installation program. The I choose only 20 GB size for windows, and
install , and later , when installing Linux,
it recognizes the rest unpartioitned 20 GB part.

I start the windows 2000 professional installtaion process.

When I reach the partioining part, it says that there
is only 130 GB free area on disk;
If I will choose to
continue with it, and install Windows on 130 GB size
partition , and later try to install Linux
- will the remaining 70 GB disk part be recognized by
the Linux installation ? (I intetnd to install
fedora 2 core 2).

I am afraid it will not but I really don't know.

If not -
what is the best solution for it ?

should I use another partitining program ?

is there a good free partitining program which
handles 200 GB disks?

Is the same is also with windows xp or windows 2003 ?
I mean - is in instatllation it permits also only 130 GB
disk size?

regards,
Que John

Idealy you need to create a slipstreamed win2k install patched to sp3 or
above
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;305098
You can allow yr current install version to partition to its max size of
about 130gb then install. After which you update win2k, taking note of the
above KB article.
You can then format and create another partition with the free space.
However there have been some posts that suggest creating a partition in the
free space remaining after the install of an unpatched (Large LBA) win2k
*can/possibly* lead to data corruption /loss. Whether this would apply if
using Linux I cannot say.

Yes. The 130GB partition that Windows 2000 setup program creates is
the primary partition. The rest of the drive remains unallocated.
I am afraid it will not but I really don't know.

A Windows XP CD that incorporates SP1 recognizes the entire drive.
I believe so does Windows 2003.
