Partition Wizard

Disk Management context menu is suppose to have an entry "new partition" to
get to the Partition Wizard. Mine doesn't. How do I get to the Partition
Wizard?

XP's DiskPart utility is capable of only partitioning a hard drive that is empty
or has "unallocated" free space.
For example, if you were to install a new second drive, DiskPart can be
used to partition and format it. DiskPart cannot segregate current files from
free space, therefore, only a sophisticated third-party partitioning program,
such as Partition Magic 8 , can be used with a drive that already has Windows XP
installed.

The only way you can create, delete, resize or merge existing partitions,
and not harm your existing Windows installation, is to purchase and use
a third-party partitioning program such as Partition Magic 8.

Is the problem solved in Vista?

Unless you have unallocated free space on your external hard drive,
you cannot create another partition using XP's DiskPart. You would
have to delete the current partition, then create a new, smaller partition
before unallocated free space becomes available for additional partitions.

In Windows Vista, you can shrink the size of a partition which will
enable you to create another partition.

Carey:
That's interesting news. It would be a most welcome additional capability of
the present Disk Management utility and go far to obviate the need (for most
users) for a third-party partition manager such as Partition Magic.

Is there also any built-in capability to merge partitions as well? Thanks
for the info.

(Just to make sure - we are talking about doing all this non-destructively,
right?)

In addition, check to be sure the external drive internals will
allow/support partitions. Often they come with warnings about partitioning.
I have an ACOM 160 Gig that says it's "best" not to partition it. So I
didn't.
But another person who bought one, a neighbor, did partition theirs. They
did it with PM 8. All worked fine for a long time. Then came the day they
decided to rearrange the partitions, and FOOP! Everything was gone but the
root directory! They could "see" their data in Explorer but couldn't do
anything with it, such as move, open, delete, copy, etc..
For grins, they brought it down here and I connected it to my system:
Exact same results. After checkign that it would work, I loaned them my hex
disk editor and sent them home, but two weeks later they gave up and just
reformatted it.
I do NOT know the actual reason for the failure, BTW. Just sharing an
experience FWIW.

IMO external drives are for archiving anyway and don't need to be
partitioned, so it's never really been much of an issue in my case. Mine's
still humming happily along and claims to be "healthy". For the time
being<g>. Actually I have two external drives and rotate archival info on
them, one always being connected for intermediate backups.
