Partial updating of a frontpage website

G

Guest

A long, long time ago...
In a galaxy far, far away...

A guy created a website using FP98 (I think). I have the task of updating
the website today. I have FP2002. The site is quite large for a small
business. Is there a way to slowly update parts of the website without
affecting other parts? I tried to download the entire website using FP2002,
but when I do this, FP always misses some files. It's always different files
each time I do this. I even tried the IE7 "Offline favorite" download and
again it always misses files. It misses different ones each time. I'd like
to be able to download a small section, fix it, and then upload it without
affecting the other sections. When uploading, FP asks for a web address and
wipes it out! Then uploads the web from the local drive. If I can't even
download the entire site at once, then the first change I make will wipe out
the other parts of the existing web!!?!! Can anyone help?

How are you "downloading" the site?

If the site has FrontPage extensions ( you can log on using http://www.websitename.com )
create a new empty web on your machine, then open the live site and select
File > Publish and publish the site back to the new empty web on your machine.
That "should" get everything down to your machine.

Then set FrontPage to publish "Changed pages only" on the publish tab in Tools > Options.

May the force be with you.

Thank you Steve for your response. I have tried that. In my first post I
wrote:

I think there are about 200 pages and over 500 image files. (It's a
manufacturer's site and he has pics of all his equipment and "previous jobs".
When I down load, I get about 50 pages at random.

I'd like to download a section to my Hard Drive, change it and publish it
without affecting the rest of the web. Then I would download another section
to my Hard Drive, add it to the section I downloaded previously and publish
it. Eventually I would download the last section and have the entire web on
my HD. And then be able to publish the whole web from my HD at any given
time.

Steve gave you the method to use.

"downloading" is a non specific answer ...if you IMported the web you will
not get everything only what's linked to the home page and no scripts if
there are any.

You should Publish the web via the http:// method to your hd.. etc.

Yes, Rob, I Imported. And Linked or not linked to the home page, the
importing is very random. I even unchecked the boxes labeled:

"import [] levels down"
"Limit to [] megaBytes"

So, Basically, I want it all!! All Levels and Any size>

When it starts, it says: Listing all files...
Then it opens a dialog saying: About.htm exists on the server, but not in
the current web. Do you want to remove it from the destination?
Yes Yes to all No No to all Cancel

If I say "No", it goes to the next file.
If I say "No to all", it ends and does nothing.

I really want it to ask me if I want to add it to the current web (which is
empty).

I'm importing it.

OK... It would seem I'm not really getting this. If I start FP, a blank
page opens. I close this page and there is no web open and no pages open.
File > Publish is dimmed.
So I File > Open Web. I select an empty web. Then I File > Publish and the
program always assumes that the destination is www.mysite.com and wants to
publish from my machine. How do I make my machine the destination and the
publish site www.mysite.com?

You need to open the live site/web:

File > Open Web >

Specify the website name i.e. the live site in the format,
http://www.example.com.

It will connect, prompt you for the logon credentials for the server;

Once connected, choose File > Publish and select or create a folder to
publish down from the server to your local PC. Since you're working with
the live site, that becomes the "local" machine and your PC is the "remote"
(desination) machine.

Choose "File system" as the publishing method (rather than
HTTP/FTP/Sharepoint/InterDev) listed in the Remote Site Properties because
"file system" is what you're publishing to (i.e. your hard drive).

Note, you could specify http://localhost as the destination (but I believe
you need the FPSE installed locally on your machine running the local
webserver software such as IIS on Windows or Apache on Linux) on your
machine.

Ok.

Open FrontPage.
Create a new empty web give it a name and save it.
Click File > Close Web ( close site in FP 2003 )

Click File > Open Web.
Enter the http://www address of the web on the remote server.
Enter the user name and password.
When it opens click File > Publish web and point FrontPage to the new empty web you created on your machine.

| Thank you Steve for your response. I have tried that. In my first post I

|
| I think there are about 200 pages and over 500 image files. (It's a
| manufacturer's site and he has pics of all his equipment and "previous
jobs".
| When I down load, I get about 50 pages at random.
|
| I'd like to download a section to my Hard Drive, change it and publish it
| without affecting the rest of the web. Then I would download another
section
| to my Hard Drive, add it to the section I downloaded previously and
publish
| it. Eventually I would download the last section and have the entire web
on
| my HD. And then be able to publish the whole web from my HD at any given
| time.
