After SP2, I can surf maybe a couple of pages, then "Page cannot...". The
computer shows I'm still connected, however, I pick up my phone and dial
tone!!! Can I uninstall SP2 without to much damage or am I better off
restoring my machine?

Hi jsc3489 :)

Yes, you can uninstall the SP2. But, first try the following and see if it
helps:

Power Management adjustments to stop connection loss:

Start>Settings> Control Panel>Network and Dial-up Connections>Local Area
Connection>Properties>Configure>Power Management tab>uncheck "Allow the
computer to turn off this device to save power."

also......

IE stops working or drops connections after a while or in hibernate mode

Start>Settings> Control Panel>Network and Dial-up Connections>Local Area
Connection>Properties>Configure>Power Management tab>uncheck Allow the
computer to turn off this device to save power.

First eliminate any spyware.
What You Should Know About Spyware

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

See

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

You're very welcome! You should also add Frank's suggestion to the 'to do'
list as well, to be sure that no scumware is involved. :)

I have had that problem over the years with different computers and
different ISP's, and never discovered a cure. However my recent experience
suggests that it can be caused by a WinModem (a software-controlled type of
modem) driver. It was largely cured for my current computer and ISP by
installing the latest driver for my Agere WinModem, which happens to be
available at the Windows Update site. That driver has a 2004 date, whereas
the latest driver made available for download by my computer's manufacturer
(Compaq) has a 2003 date.

I believe SP2 takes best when it is installed on a new clean op system. I've
tried uninstalling SP2 in the past and didn't get a good result. It's a
risk.
