Page Cannot Be Displayed

IE6 with WinXP Pro:

Can't naviagte to a particular site, which is NOT a secure
site, ( not https. ) This just started today after years
of being able to go to that site.

The error is "Page Cannot Be Displayed."

Deleted History, Cookies and Temp Int Files.

Checked Host file. It is OK. Renamed Host file so that
the system would create another Host file.

IE will navigate to any other site EXCEPT this particular
site.

Ping of this particular site works.

Get to site easily with Netscape browser, just as a test.

Ran anti-virus scan. Ran Adaware and Spyware Blaster,
nothing new.

Ran Scandisk & Defrag.

NO, it is NOT a porn site! :)

HELP!!!!!!!!!???????

Email addy is without the triple-S.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions! :)

Regards......

Check for a file named HOSTS with no extension (not Hosts.sam). It may be a
hidden file. Open it with Notepad and remove any line referencing the site.
Or, rename HOSTS to OLDHOSTS

In my original post I did say that I had already checked
the HOSTS file and it is ok. The only entry is 127.0.0.1
localhost. However, just to be on the safe side I renamed
the HOSTS file. That did nothing, as well.

I know that the broswer has been hijacked. I'm only
looking for possible fixes and am now reading at the mvps
site but any other suggestions are welcome. Also, I know
I've been hacked, not by spyware but by a hacker. He has,
for whatever reason, chosen to not permit the browser to
go to that particular site. I'm just trying to find out
what he has done.

Completely Lost,
If you can "ping" but not access this usually indicates a corrupt cache ...
(see below)
Try a "flush" via the articles at the bottom of the below page:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
--
You may need to clear your TIF as you may have a corrupt file there.

Close all instances of OE and IE
Control Panel | Internet Options | General tab
Click the "Delete Files" button, when prompted place a check in:
"Delete all offline content", click OK
Click the "Clear History" button, click OK.
Click the Settings button, adjust the TIF size to 50 mb, click OK

[more info]
Possibly your cache folder is corrupt:
