Does the p5vd1-x motherboard, with the latest bios update, support a Pentium
D 830 CPU?

Thanks in advance.

It's funny. The ad copy on the usa.asus.com motherboard page,
says it is a dual core board. And yet the CPU Support page
doesn't list any dual cores. Sounds like it is going to
cost you a phone call to tech support, to find out what
the story is (there could be some limitation that has
turned up in the chipset - you never know...).

Note that the PCI Express slot on that board, only has
4 PCI-E lanes wired to it. While the slot may look like
a PCI-E x16 slot, electrically it will perform like a
x4 slot. This would have a small impact on video performance,
if you stuck a high end PCI Express video card in there.

I like how the Via marketeers, do not label the number
of lanes on the PCI Express video slot, leaving it to the
reader's imagination. Oops...

They are more truthful here:

Thanks for the excellent response!

I called Asus today but unfortunately wasn't able to get any real answer
from them either. The tech rep was friendly and knowledgeable and did
acknowledge the conflict between the specs (also given in the user's maual)
and the list of supported processors. His "guess" was that the northbridge
chip would support Pentium D but that the BIOS hadn't cuaght up yet. A Bios
upgrade was released 12/1 but this seems mainly to improve support of 1066
FSB.

A guy in a consumer review on a selling site (forget which one) said he was
running an 820 on the board and it worked fine. But I don't know whether to
take the chance or not. I've got an 830 coming, ordered based on the specs
in the user's manual. $50 restocking fee if I return it. But maybe that's
the best thing to do.
