P4PE-X and freezing >_<

Jody Pellerin

I have the P4PE-X motherboard, P4 2.8C HT, 2x512 Micron DDR ram, etc. At
random, this thing likes to freeze. Under load, idle, whatever. I thought I
had it fixed when it was on for five days straight without a glitch.
However, I decided to do a CPU torture test with Prime95 (Seen it mentioned
in here, decided to test it out and watch my temperatures) the CPU got to 55
degrees C when it froze.
I've discovered I am by far the only person having this problem with this
motherboard. But I haven't found anybody that has found a fix for the
freezing yet.
Anybody here have any experience with this?
I hate to list every single thing I've tried in attempt to fix this. But
maybe I'm missing something....

Hello, I have tried 2.8c in the P4PE-X with few problems. I also tried 3.2c
processor, does the same thing your talking about.

I use Corsair CMX512-3200C2PT 512MB DDR400 PC3200 XMS Memory
I have tried with one stick and two sticks in the board, same thing

The Corsair CMX512 ,. I can use two sticks with the 2.8c works good with my
P4PE-X
By the way his motherboard is being over clocked with this 800mhz fsb
processor,.

I bought a P4P800-E deluxe to run the 3.2c, and it works great with that same
ddr memory.

Try That Corsair, I bet it will work. I will buy me a 3.06 533 fsb next, I got a
couple P4PE-X motherboards
I can use.. great board, I just can't use anything above 2.8c processor with
this board.

That's quite interesting. Micron is supposed to be good ram and on the
approved vendors list. I can't exactly afford to buy new ram right now
though.
It's also interesting because this board is 'supposed' to be able to handle
as high as P4 3.4Ghz, even the P4 EE chips.

Maybe try a different Video card, or ddr400
again I can't run anything above 2.8c with the lates bios.. same thing with

I have talked to an intel rep, I had same issue as you. I told them what I use,
they again reminded me that I am
overclocking this motherboard with my 3.2c , I bet its the same issue with you
with the 2.8c. What kind of video card
are you using? Maybe Asus will release an updated bios so we can have a fix for
this problem, to bad its tough getting
intouch with them. I think should be able to run the 3.2c with this board. I can
with the 2.8c with this Corsiar ddr and thisAsus
Geforce FX 5700, this compo seems to works great for me,. I can play Unreal
Tournament 2004 with no problems, its Fast.
I wish I had a better Video Card, but all good things in do time.. in my other
P4PE-BP , at the moment I have my Asus Geforce FX 5800
in that one.. anyways good luck. if you need to email me fill free.

I also found this page, take a look at it.
http://www.asus.com.tw/support/cpusupport/fsb800.aspx Maybe I have too much
ram in this board?
I have contacted Asus today about this. No response yet. I'm using a Radeon
8500LE 128MB 4X AGP video card.
This is the message I sent to their help desk today
"At random, this computer likes to freeze up. I've tried every possible
thing to fix this problem. Changed CPU, Power supply, Ram, formatted, no
viruses, latest drivers, used old drivers, disabled hyperthreading, ram
hardware tests, ram tests, did process or elimination with hardware, etc.
I have found I am by far the only person having this issue with this
motherboard. I bought this board probably less then two months ago brand
new. Have taken it to a technician with no success.
I am hoping there is a fix for this or a revised bios version coming out
soon to fix this problem. Can you please provide some assistance on this
issue?
Thank you."

For me it didn't make any difference one or two sticks, try one stick and see
if it helps.. I bought a
P4P800-E Deluxe.. solved my problems I had with the 3.2c freezing ... now I
have a P4PE-X sitting around.
Still its a good backup for my 2.66ghz P4PE-BP .. I might buy a Pentium 3.06
533mhz fsp. it should be better for the
P4PE-X,. maybe a updated bios can fix some issues as well. Call intel see what
they say. By the way Intel rep called me
back to see how things are going with my 3.2c I was have problems with the
P4PE-X. I told him since I changed to the P4P800-E
I don't get the freezes anymore, so there was nothing wrong with cpu..sucks I
know,. it happens.. its was easier contacting intel.. have you
tried a more updated video card with that 2.8c ,. that 8500LE , I have no
experince in trying... freezing is a sign of overclocking.. maybe that
card just don't go good with this compo,. maybe I am wrong... I stick with Asus
Video Cards. makes more since for me..

Good suggestion about the video card. I would buy a new mobo but we can't
afford it right now. This system was just built less then two months ago.
Right now, it doesn't seem to be freezing too much. But it's good to know
about the ram. I guess this board just doesn't handle well with an 800FSB. I
wish I had have done my home work before I bought it :(
I'm going to stop into the place where I bought this board some time this
week and talk to the guy there, he's quite familiar with us now :) Tell him
what I found out and so on, and see how much more it would cost to get a
better/newer motherboard.
It still really bugs me about the freezing though. :( If it wasn't for that,
this system would be perfect.
40GB 7200RPM, 120GB 7200RPM HDDs, 1gig RAM, HP DVD-RW 420i, LG 52x32x52
CD-RW, 10 USB ports (4 on a PCI add-on card), Soundblaster Live! 5.1,
Microsoft Natural Multimedia keybpard, Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical, HP
Photosmart 7150 printer, HP Photosmart 318 digital camera, Cannon LIDE 20
scanner, Windows XP SP1, Radeon 8500LE, P4 2.8C (Hyperthreading DISabled)

Maybe if I get my sludge hammer.... it's amazing what intimidation can do to
an attitude :)

maybe I'm missing something....

If you read the web page for using an 845PE Northbridge with an
FSB800 processor, it says you can use only one DDR400 DIMM in
that configuration. Connecting two DIMMs is asking for trouble.

The manual has this statement in it:

"If you installed a CPU with 800MHz FSB, you need to use
a PC3200 (400MHz) DDR module."

Which seems to be a weasly way of saying "a PC3200" equals
"one PC3200" DIMM.

Compare to this page:
http://www.asus.com.tw/support/cpusupport/fsb800.aspx

Something else you might want to consider, is it could be the
cooling on the Northbridge. Motherboards, no matter what brand,
sometimes have problems with the way the heatsink is fastened
to the motherboard, and the heatsink may not be making good
contact. Some heatsinks don't have any thermal interface material
between the heatsink and the chip. Others use an adhesive pad,
which can make removal difficult, without damaging the chip, so
just have a look at it first, and if it is secure, leave it alone.

Paul

This chip had a thermal pad with the heatsink but after finding out they're
usually crap, I got rid of it and bought Artic Silver 5 compound. Using that
now.
I already found that page however and noticed that thing about the Ram. I'm
using 2 512MB PC3200 DDR400 sticks, double sided Micron. The sad thing is,
the qualified vendors list hardly supports double sided, let alone 512MB. So
I was wondering if that might be it. If it is, I'm not overly happy. I don't
know why the guy didn't tell us that this board couldn't handle that.

Oh, somone other that Asus is getting the business.... rest assured.

After screwing around for the last few days with the RAM, this machine
now crashes at random intervals wiht just a single DIMM in it. Put
back EXACTLY the way it was prior to ading memory, and the thing dumps
more often than a two-year-old on prune juice!

Soon as the sun comes up Im off to get a new board and RAM.

THanks for the advice. Ive had Asus before with good results, but
simply dont have the time to play repairman on this thing.
