P4P800 problem with USB 2.0 ?

Am having an annoying problem getting a USB 2.5" HDD enclosure working with my
ASUS P4P800 Deluxe motherboard in USB 2.0 mode.

The enclosure is recognised as a USB Mass Storage Device on bootup and can be
written and read from as a USB 1.0 device ok (but slow of course).

But when ports are configured for USB 2.0 then on plugging in the enclosure
(front or rear ports) the message "USB Device Not Recognized" pops up bottom
right of XP and "Unknown Device" later shows up in XP's Device Manager.

The USB 2.5" HDD enclosure is a (UHH-AL2) and uses an ALI (M5621 A1) chipset if
that is any help to anybody.

Motherboard is running latest BIOS (1014) and XP has SP1 and all patches etc
installed.

The same enclosure has been tried on a friends computer with the same ASUS
motherboard and operating system but the same problem happens to him.

Anyone know what might be going wrong?

I've emailed ASUS but no response as yet.

The UHH-AL2 doesn't have his own powersupply.
I also had problem with a drive without powersupply.
It seems the P4P800 ( by me deluxe ) has not enough power on his USB ports.
Now i have the drive on a powered USB-hub and it runs fine

I've got two of these, one came with a power supply and one without. The
one without power supply came with a dual USB hookup that gives it all the
power it needs. I also use the dual USB plug on the one that came with the
power supply (without the power supply) and it works also. You might try
one of these connectors.

The UHH-AL2 doesnt have its own power supply but it can take power from a PS2
port which I've done so that cant be the problem.

I can hear drive spin up fine, but just comes up "Device Unknown" to XP.

This is really beginning to frustrate me.

This is really beginning to frustrate me.

I've had somewhat similar problems with Windows 2000 which is of course very
similar to XP. I had repeated aggravations with USB devices on this board.
Sometimes they would be recognized and sometimes they would not be
recognized. Once Windows 2000 (and presumably XP also) starts getting
confused about USB devices, it only gets worse and will finally terminate in
your not being able to reliably have ANY USB device recognized.

The problem apparently has little to do with the Asus board and everything
to do with the operating system. In my case, I had the 6 native USB 2.0
ports that are on the board, 2 more on the front of my case from wires that
plug into the mobo, and I also had a 1 or 2 year old add in 4 port USB 2.0
PCI card in the box. Because I couldn't come up with anything else, even
after posting on the Windows 2000 ng (which really sucks from what I've
seen, you will never get a useful answer there, at least I never have), so
this is what I did:

I removed the extra, add in USB 2.0 PCI card. I unplugged all my USB
devices. I rebooted, then went into device manager (Control
Panel->System->Advanced->Device Manager ) and then I deleted all the USB
controllers and hubs and everything else under Universal Serial Device.
Then, I reloaded the Intel Chipset driver installation program, which you
can either get an older version off your P4P800 Deluxe CD ROM, or a newer
version off the Intel website. I think you have to reboot at this point.
Don't let W2K or XP reload the USB devices at this point if you can avoid
it. Then I reloaded the latest Service Pack for W2K which is SP4 (don't
know which one is latest for XP but use it as they are all cumulative and
USB drivers have changed in the last few months). Then rebooted. Windows
will then find your controllers and hubs. Start plugging back in devices
one by one.

This solved the problem for me, completely. And I'd had various degrees of
this USB device recognition problem for the last 6 or 8 weeks. I even put
another, a different, 2 port USB PCI card in the box and so far so good with
everything.

I think this is just a different version of the same problem I was having
and if you do these steps most probably you can resolve the problems.

Out of interest, do you remember if it was just USB 2.0 that didn't get
recognized by Win2k?

ie. USB 1.1 worked fine. (as it does for me).

Hi Tony,

The first symptoms of my USB problem with W2K were very vague; my external
hub in a monitored was not recognized, was an "unknown" device. Then it
started acting like I'd removed USB devices "unsafely" when I had not, which
was simply that my CF reader was not being recognized as a "removable disk"
even though the drivers are set up that way. It kept getting worse and
worse, finally climaxing with not recognizing external USB 2.0 hard disks or
really anything else I would plug in.

I don't specifically recall that it would not recognize 2.0 but would
recognize 1.1 devices, but I think these are all symptoms of the same
thing -- confusion over drivers due to device driver conflicts, most likely
from several versions of USB drivers having been loaded by various patches
and new devices you've added to your system and also service packs.

By the way, when I said to "delete" all the USB devices in Device manager, I
meant to "uninstall them," not disable them. You want the devices to
disappear completely from device manager. In the end you should not even
have a listing entitled "USB" or Universal Serial Bus.

It is a good idea, of course, to have a ghosted image of your system drive
before you do stuff like this, just in case it blows up in your face, so you
can get back to where you were.

Our drive had also a PS2 power connection, but didn't work.
The powered USB hub solve the problems.

I have the non-deluxe P4P800 with 8 USB2

And they seem to work a OK.

I have a 7-1 USB2 internal card reader, (which
has 2 cables, and connects to a mobo header),
a USB digital cam, a USB optical mouse, and a
USB HP Photo printer connected to 3 of the USB
ports on the back of the case. All are going.

The printer is the only thing, thats USB 2
and seems to work OK.

And no hub at all on this.

You did enable USB in the BIOS didnt you?
Change USB controller to enabled?
USB controller Mode (Hi Speed, or Full Speed)
(I have this on Full Speed).

Also on the non-deluxe, there's an option
called USB Function (You have the option
Disabled | 2 USB | 4 USB | 6 USB | 8 USB

Is this 8 on yours (Or how many ports are on the
Deluxe version)?

A1) chipset wont work at USB 2.0 with the board (USB 1.1 works ok but too slow

It seems not all external USB 2.0 devices out there work equally and
smoothly.

I have 2 different external USB 2.0 cases for 2.5" disk, one of the probably
2nd
generation, which works only with some old USB 2.0 cards, and sometimes does
not work with the usb slots from the motherboard - also P4P800 DLX.

The newer one is better. It works with both usb slots from motherboard and
from
USB 2.0 card. But there is a risk when buying these since there is no way to
test it,
except having it plugged in the PC.


You may have to suffer some risk if the device is fried. I had that bitter
experience
once, but I was lucky that the 2.5" disk was not damaged.

mine works with P4P800D and it is a "CrossFire" from smartdisk...but
it may be a 3.5...

the only problem I had was with a USB 1.1 device that dragged the USB
speed down to USB 1.x.

when I disconnected it, all devices worked at thier specified
speeds...

You need to install the driver, in the accompanied CD or download the driver
from Asus website.

In Win2K, you go to the Control Panel -- ... -- Hardware Device manger,
and direct the update driver to the directory of USB 2.0 driver.

You may, or may not, need to restart.

I have both P4C800E-D and P4P800 DLX, they need to install driver with
Win2K. But I do not remember if I did with WinXP - SP1 or not.
