P2B-DS CPU-Upgrade

V

VolKas

Hello,
I´ve got the P2B-DS (Rev. 1.04) with a PII 350.
I changed the cpu to a PIII 500 (SL35E).
But nothing happens. The fan´s are on, but the screen is black an the
harddisk led is always on.
I tried it with bios 1013 and bios 1014B3.
Do I need to change the termination card too ???
Do I need to change any jumper ???

Many thanks in advance

Not true. This old revision does not natively support _coppermine_ PIII
(either you'd need a fcpga PIII and a slotket with voltage adjustments
or modify the slot1 cartridge), but it certainly supports old _katmai_
PIII. And the SL35E is a Katmai.
No idea why it wouldn't run. Sounds like a dead cpu to me.

SL35E should be no problem at all for your board, with either of the
BIOS versions you have tried. Are you sure the CPU is OK?

If the CPU is known good, it could be a processor seating issue - it can
sometimes be difficult to get a good connection between the CPU and the
slot, especially if you are using the original retention mechanism with
an SECC2 processor like the SL35E - make sure the processor is fully
seating into the slot, compare the installation with the original PII
350. You might need to replace the retention mechanism with a Universal
Retention Module (URM). Sometimes the processor will even go too far
into the slot - you could try inserting it fully, then pulling it back
out about 1mm at both ends.

You could also try the processor in the other slot, and/or try without
the terminator card - I never used to use the terminator cards on these
boards, but I've discovered XP will hang if you don't. The board will
definitely boot up without the terminator for testing.

P2B-DS rev 1.04 supports all Coppermine PIII processors, although you
must arrange to modify the processor's VID request to be 1.8v if it's
default is lower than 1.8v. The OP is upgrading to a 2.0v processor.
