output to tv too big...?

I've got dvi to hdmi cable to tv from ati card. Only 2 output resolutions
are available 800x600 and the 2048x1536. Radeon 7000.

it's about half the width of the start menu too big on all sides so you
can't see X close window buttons and various edge of screen items.

Any way to tweak the resolution to decrease the screen size? I haven't been
able to do much with the ati control panel or desktop properties settings.

The 800 x 600 doesn't take up anywhere near the whole screen of course, it's
missing a couple inches top and bottom and about a foot on both sides.

I haven't updated catalyst. It appears that the specs for the card cover
1920x1080, perhaps the updated 'drivers' will fix it.
