Outlook XP crashes when I click the Inbox icon.

Suddenly yesterday, without any obvious reason, when I click on INBOX in
Outlook 2002... Outlook crashes. My three .pst 's (Outlook.pst, Archive.pst
and Recipes.pst) were all under 240MB's in size. I tried Error-Check,
Scanpst.exe (Inbox Repair Tool), and other simple fix tries. Nothing makes a
difference. Scanpst.exe didn't find a problem with Outlook.pst, though it
still has a definite problem.

I can't directly access any incoming email going into INBOX. But all other
Outlook functions work fine so far. Though I managed to handle incoming mail
crudely by using Copernic Desktop Search to show me what was in the INBOX.
Outgoing mail is ok.

This computer I built just over a year ago and it ran great until yesterday
when this Outlook 2002 problem appeared. I use this computer extensively
every day and night for a multitude of pressing tasks, and for lots of email.
What can I do to remedy the problem without a drive wipe and reinstall?

I routinely delete junk files, clean caches, run Error-Check and Defrag --
use ZoneAlarm Pro, NOD32 Antivirus and several spyware catcher/cleaners. I
build my own computers, am not a novice user and can usually fix most any
problem with a bit of research. This one stumps me.

Does Outlook work in safe mode? (This will help rule out issues with
addins, views, .etc)

How to:
Start > Run > outlook.exe /safe > OK button

Running Outlook in safe mode, per your instructions, made no
difference. Clicking on Inbox still crashed Outlook and yielded an
error. All other functions of Outlook appear to be fully functional.

Rebooting the computer to safe mode and running Outlook also made no
difference.

Each crash of Outlook yields a slightly different Exception Information
Code.

No apps were installed, modified or uninstalled prior to the Inbox
malfunction starting. Scanning for viruses in-depth has yielded no
potential causes. Running CounterSpy, AdAware and Spybot Search &
Destroy yielded nothing but low-threat cookies.

Thanks for your assistance, and I'm still chipping away at seeking an
answer.

The poster may have meant Outlook Safe Mode; search Office Help for
"safe mode" on how to start Office programs in safe mode.

Pat, thank you... but I tried Outlook safe mode, and Windows safe mode...
without any change in the malfunction of Outlook Inbox crashing when its icon
is clicked on. I also tried restore to an earlier point, and that didn't
change anything.

In your original text you mention trying other simple fixes, did one of
those include creating a new mail profile via the mail applet in the control
panel? (don't copy the existing one. create new and try the new one.)

Assuming that you are running Windows 2000/XP, does the crash happen under
all operating system userids or just confined to yours?

Neo... thank you... very much. Creating a new profile via control panel >
mail worked. Migrating things into the new Outlook.pst is working well, and
I'm almost back to having full funtionality with everything as I'm used to
having it for convenience.

I did, however, create several other new profiles via the same routine for
each potentially large .pst file I'll have. Instead of just creating
multiple .pst files and opening them all in the main profile as needed or
convenient... as I have done for years without problem.

Another possible problem could have been that I have always placed numerous
subfolders in multiple tree levels in Inbox and Sent Items. My setup now has
subfolders for Inbox and Sent Items placed in related folders external of
those two folders. I rememberd having read somewhere that several people had
problems eventually after placing and using multiple subfolder trees in the
..pst's standard folders.

Again, thank you and the other folks who responded to my post that requested
assistance.

Hello,

I had the same problem, and created a new Outlook profile and am rebuilding my email accounts. But, I still need to access the emails from my corrupted Inbox in the original Outlook profile. Did you figure out how to do this?

Thank you.
