Outlook XP 2003 starts ok but intermittent hangs on message view/preview for 20s - 2mins.

Win2k / SP2
Outlook 2003
Messenger integration disabled.
PST file: About 150MB

After upgrading from Outlook 2002 to Outlook 2003 it intermittently
stops responding. It doesn't seem that it is during message
send/receive that this happens. Typically I start up Outlook and
everything seems fine, it start as quickly as it always did. Then my
inbox messages and spam arrive. If I click on a message it may show in
the preview pane straight away but very often it is as if Outlook
hangs for 20s - 2 mins and the message neither is selected or
displayed. I can't move the Outlook window - it's like its main thread
is completely frozen.

During this hang Task Manager shows idle processes taking up 99% of
the CPU time.

Any suggestions?

Is there a more diagnostic tool then TaskManager that will detail the
idle tasks so i can identify what is happening?

Other curiosities are that it has been corrupting task items. I keep
backups of the PST file but I haven't found a method to compare the
files to check which, if any, other items have been lost.

I'm seeing the same behavior and it's driving me crazy! Typically I see this
at startup or when it checks my inboxes All of my inboxes are IMAP, so I'm
not sure if it's related to that vs. POP or not. Hopefully MS or someone can
provide some insight into this phenomenon.

I have searched this newsgroups but not found any suggestions to the
problem; just the usual Messenger integration issue which I have
already tried.
